Sony Cybershot RX100 Review
Sony Cybershot RX100 is a feature-packed compact camera aimed all the photography enthusiasts. Offering an integrated 3.6x, 28-100mm Carl Ziues Sonnar T* zoom lens with a fast aperture of F1.8 at the wide-angle setting, a 20.2 megapixel 1.0-type Exmor CMOS image sensor and full 1080p high-definition video recording, the RX100 also boasts a high resolution 3 inch LCD screen, continuous shooting at up to 10fps at full resolution, high-speed autofocus that locks onto your target in 0.13 seconds, built-in pop-up flash, support for the Raw format and full manual controls. On paper at least it offers almost everything that the more experienced photographer could want - a relatively large 13.2mm x 8.8mm CMOS sensor, which is the same size as that used in the Nikon 1 series compact system cameras and 4x as big as a typical compact sensor, a fast lens (at least at the 28mm wide-angle focal length), a large and high-resolution screen, speedy auto-focusing system plus manual focusing too, full control over exposure and even Raw file format support. Sony DSC-RX100 has a fast maximum aperture of f/1.8 at the 28mm wide-angle setting, but somewhat disappointingly this slows to f/4.9 at the 100mm full telephoto setting. Still, the combination of the fast lens with a seven- bladed circular aperture and the big sensor is a real joy to use, allowing you to easily create defocused depth-of-field effects that you simply can't achieve with most other pocket cameras. Sony RX100 is still quite small and slender, measuring just over 3.5cm in depth, 5.8cm in height and 10cm in width, and weighing 240g with the battery and memory card fitted. On the back there is a large 3-inch, 1228k-dot resolution LCD screen. As you'd expect with a screen of that size on such a small camera, the RX100 has no optical viewfindr to fall back on in brighter lighting conditions, although in practice Sony's WhiteMagic technology results in a a very high contrast screen that can be comfortably used outdoors even in harsh sunlight. The Face Detection system automatically adjusts the focus, exposure and white balance for people in the frame, and can even be set to distinguish between children and adults. Smile Detection offers three self-explanatory options, Big, Normal and Slight. Used in conjunction, the Face and Smile Detection systems do result in more hits than misses, especially in contrasty lighting conditions, although all those smiling faces could ultimately freak you out a little! Efficient device, but with an “at your own risk factor”.
Overall Review
The Sony Cybershot RX100 is a feature-packed compact camera aimed at the discerning photographer. Offering an integrated 3.6x, 28-100mm Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T zoom lens with a fast aperture of F1.8 at the wide-angle setting, a 20.2 megapixel 1.0-type Exmor CMOS image sensor and full 1080p high-definition video recording, the RX100 also boasts a high resolution 3 inch LCD screen, continuous shooting at up to 10fps at full resolution, high-speed autofocus that locks onto your target in 0.13 seconds, built-in pop-up flash, support for the Raw format and full manual controls. The Sony RX100 has a huge one-inch sensor - the biggest ever stuffed into a pocketable zoom camera.
Design and Build Quality
Outer design of the RX100 is sleek, and while this makes for some handling issues later on, visual appearance is simple and modern. Despite the 1-inch sensor, no compromises have been made to the size of the chassis. This is a true ultra compact that’s slim and portable. The hardware package is topped off by an excellent lens and full size mode dial. This camera is all black, with the silver lettering for Sony standing out. The aluminum casing ensures a solid body to handle minor scrapes and rough jostling while in your pocket. Sony, like Canon, has given the RX100 lens a control ring around the lens with eight functions that help operability. This step-less ring can be used to adjust focus mid-shot without any clicking noise due to the variable silent aperture. A bit of playing around is needed to adjust to its sensitivity.
Focus and Face Detection
Zoom control is unlocked while a recording is in progress, but the motor is slowed to cut down on mechanical noise. The zoom lever is best for operation; however the main control ring can also be mapped to this function. Only continuous and manual focus are available for video, since single and DMF would’ve been redundant. Manual focus is slowed just like zoom, making this feature much more frustrating than it is for still photography. When you manually focus, MF Assist automatically magnifies the image to help you get sharp result, and there's also the same convenient Peaking function from Sony's DSLRs that highlights sharply-focused areas of the image on the LCD screen. The Face Detection system automatically adjusts the focus, exposure and white balance for people in the frame, and can even be set to distinguish between children and adults.
Lens and Image Stabilization
The lens has f/1.8 focal length; in combination with the lens zoomed out wide and the aperture set low, this is ideal for low light situations without blur. There is a quick auto-focus on the lens, going from infinity to macro in bright light in just 0.13 seconds and extending to 0.23 seconds for darker ambience. The lens is given a multi-layer coating of Vario-Sonnar T to keep ghosting and flare as low as possible. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 has 2 different image quality settings available, with Fine being the highest quality option. The effective Dynamic Range Optimizer function extracts more detail from the shadow and highlight areas in an image, without introducing any unwanted noise or other artifacts.
The High Dynamic Range mode combines two shots taken at different exposures to produce one image with greater dynamic range than a single image would produce. The Picture Effects quickly produce special looks that would otherwise require you to spend a lot of time in the digital darkroom, while the Creative Styles provide a quick and easy way to tweak the camera's JPEG images.
Screen and Menus
The rear of the DSC-RX100 is dominated by a large 3 inch LCD screen, with the resolution a pleasingly high- 1228k dots. To the right of the screen is the useful one-touch movie record button next to the rubberized thumb-rest. Underneath is the Function button, which accesses up to 7 customizable options that appear on the LCD screen as a semi-circle of icons that can be selected using either the lens or rear control rings. The Function menu proves to be a very handy way to quickly change the RX100's key settings and one of the main ways of setting the camera to suit your shooting style.
Battery
A lockable plastic cover protects the lithium-ion battery, good for 330 shots or 80 minutes AVCHD video, the camera battery is charged via the USB port, rather than a more convenient separate charger, so it's a good idea to invest in an extra battery.
Video Mode
A 1080p video recording is possible, shot at 60 frames. The flexible settings include picture effects with filters, which can even be applied to videos. This broadens the creative possibilities for the photographer. For the first time, manual controls are provided for video in the RX100. Moreover, a live HDMI output can be used for monitoring video shooting at 1080p. The only camera in the same category / price range of compact cameras with better resolution in video mode is the Panasonic GH2. The audio experience is enhanced with stereo microphones. Control options are extremely in depth. Video mode is subdivided into four different modes, one for each of the “PASM” techniques, allowing full control over all shooting variables, even while a recording is in progressSony has included Intelligent Auto scene recognition, which works in virtually identical fashion to the intelligent auto modes of Panasonic's and Canon's compact ranges.
Sensors
Though smaller than the sensor in interchangeable lens cameras, the RX100 has the largest sensor in the category of fixed lens compact cameras. This allows the lens to capture more light, thereby giving a much improved image quality. The Rx100 has the same sensor size as the Nikon J1, but with double the resolution at equivalent low light performance. The only camera that exceeds the 1 inch sensor of the RX100 is the Canon G1 X, but that is as bulky as a DSLR. Sony has managed to fit a wide-angle zoom lens into a tiny camera, which is quite commendable technical.
Pros
RAW imaging works great on this camera, although it is not possible when picture effect is used. It incorporates a powerful depth of field that allows mid-ground focus while blurring the fore and background; this feature has been successfully associated only with DSLRs until now. In fact, the aperture range is ideal for photographs with blur effect. The camera has a manually extending and retracting barrel; while retracting, it goes right inside, flush with the body of the camera, which is great to pop it into the pocket of a shirt or pant. The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-RX100 offers the right balance between image quality and portability / convenience.
Cons
Its small size can work at a disadvantage for people with bigger fingers. This camera does not have an electronic viewfinder, but this is a technical limitation of its compact size rather than a flaw. Its internal flash is of average quality; the lack of a hot shoe means that no external flash unit can be mounted either. Charging the battery can be slightly inconvenient as there is no external charger. Also, the cover for the USB connector port is flimsy. However, the battery can be charged in the car using the universal phone charger cord. Although the functions are easy enough to understand after investing a little time and patience, the RX100 does not come with a manual either in print or CD form.
