Over all Review of Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W710 Point & Shoot
Sony has added its DSC-W710 product to the Cyber-Shot line-up of compact imaging devices with one significant feature namely, afford-ability. The camera sports a 16megapixel super HAD CCD image sensor, which may come as a surprise to many. Before the sensor sits on the optical zoom lens that allows zoom up to 5x, which gives you enough space for framing scenes whether outdoors or indoors. The focal length of 35mm equivalent ranges from the wide angle 28mm to the 140mm moderate telephoto. The maximum aperture is quite dull, ranging from f/3.2 at wide angle to f/6.5 at telephoto. Sadly, you do not get any sort of mechanical image stabilization, therefore the only way you have to fetch blur free images is to increase the ISO sensitivity to achieve higher shutter speed, but that shall raise the noise levels too. Speaking of the ISO, it ranges from 100 to 3200ISO.
At the back, you have smaller than average sized screen that is, 2.7inches wide, clear photo LCD monitor with a resolution of 230,000 dots. These digicams usually feature 3inches wide LCD or TFT monitor. At the front, you have a flash of range just 2.7meters wide angle that is, when auto ISO is turned on. The easy to use features are Sony's Intelligent Auto mode, that recognizes the given scene type and accordingly configures the settings best suitable for the shot to be taken. Another function is the sweep panorama with up to 360 degrees that capture many images as you sweep the camera and stitches them to deliver a beautiful panoramic view. All you need to do is just press the shutter once and pan across. What more Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W710 Point & Shoot speaks of is the beauty effect function, which enables retouching of portrait images; you can smoothen and tone the subject's skin, widen the eyes, whiten the teeth and even remove unwanted shine.
Apart from stills you can shoot videos at HD 720p resolution, the format of video would be 1280 x 720 at a frame rate of 30fps. Sony Cyber-shot W710 derives its power from the proprietary NP-BN lithium ion rechargeable battery. There is a provision for USB 2.0 high-speed data connectivity and for composite standard-def video output as well. As far the memory space is concerned, photos and videos are stored on either SD or SDHC cards or on Sony's proprietary Memory Stick Duo cards.
Design and Build Quality
The surfaces of Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W710 Point & Shoot are smooth and slippery. This makes the camera easier to put in and take out of pocket but once out, it does not give much confidence in handling. The rear physical controls are simple, clear, and legible enough. The directional pad is responsive; in fact, by just one hand you can navigate the entire menu. But sadly, when it comes to menus, they are very sluggish with poor design. Other cameras by Sony feature quick menu stuff but this model lacks the required processing speed. The main menu can be accessed from the bottom of quick menu overlay, so through the pages you have to go slowly, to access it. The monitor has a low resolution such that viewing images may not be fun for all. The camera is available in Pink, Silver, and Black with dimensions of 97.0mm x 55.1mm x 20.0mm. The weight of body is 98grams and with battery and memory card, it is approx 114grams.
Focus and Face Detection
The focal length of 35mm-equivalent is 28 – 140mm. You can attain auto focus as well with AF assist light, and there is no manual focus. There is a face detection function and an auto smile shutter (works when it detects a smile) aid to improve the portraits by stressing on exposure and focus over the subject's face. In summary, the face detection can either be auto or off, you get face selection key as well. At max., the number of faces that can be detected is 8. And focus mode is a flexible spot AF in Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W710 Point & Shoot.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W710 Point & Shoot comes with an optical zoom up to 5x. The 35mm-equivalent focal length range is 28-140mm that gives perspectives of wide-angle to telephoto that suits many shooting situations. What benefits the lens' long-range ability is its inbuilt steady shot image stabilization that helps lessen the camera shake in both the directions, horizontal and vertical. The zoom accuracy with this Sony lens is precise and the digital zoom can reach up to 4x.
Screen and Menus
The screen is 2.7inches wide LCD. The screen resolution is low when images are viewed. Menu navigation is time consuming and layout is not impressive. The processing power of menu is quite slow in Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W710 Point & Shoot.
You can capture around 220 shots, under CIPA ratings, meaning 110minutes on a single charge. As per the supplied accessories mentioned on site, you get a proprietary lithium-ion rechargeable battery (NP-BN) and AC adapter (AC-UB10) along with multi USB, wrist strap, and guidebook with Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W710 Point & Shoot.
Video can be captured at HD resolution of 720p and at frame rate of 30fps. You can also avail of videos out to your TV via cable. The video mode can be chosen either as NTSC or as PAL in Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W710 Point & Shoot.
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W710 Point & Shoot features a super HAD CCD sensor of effective megapixel count of 16.1 and captures high-resolution pictures up to pixels 4608 x 3456. Also, the size of the sensor is 1/2.3 inches.

• Menus are simple but sluggish in Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W710 Point & Shoot

With 16megapixels Super HAD CCD image sensor on a digital compact camera, expecting affordability would be a tough thought, but it is not so with Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W710 Point & Shoot. An optical zoom up to 5 times gives you enough scope for framing typical conventional scenes, inside or outside. The 35mm-equivalent focal range lies between the wide angle 28mm to moderate telephoto 140mm. The maximum aperture is quite dim, that starts from f/3.2 at wide angle and falls to f/6.5, telephoto. You do not get mechanical image stabilization in any way so what you are left with as a choice, is to increase the ISO to achieve higher shutter speed, in turn raising noise too, but this combination would only fetch you blur free snaps. Speaking of ISO, here it ranges between 100 and 3200. At the rear, you have 2.7inches wide clear photo LCD monitor with the resolution of 230,000 dots. At the face panel, you have flash that touches only 2.7meters at wide angle when auto ISO is on. The array of features include Sony Intelligent Auto mode that quickly recognizes the given scene and then configures the camera aptly. Another is the 360-degree sweep panorama feature that stitches the images and brings out the entire sweep in one image. For that, just press the shutter once and pan across.
A beauty effect function enables you to retouch images such as you can tone the subject's skin, whiten teeth, widen eyes, and even remove shine. As far as video recording is concerned, you can shoot HD video at 720p, at the frame rate of 30fps and resolution of 1280 x 720pixels. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W710 Point & Shoot derives its power by a proprietary NP-BN lithium ion rechargeable battery. With USB 2.0 connectivity, you can avail of high-speed data transfer. Furthermore, you can achieve composite standard-def video output. All your data gets stored either on SD or on SDHC cards, or on the proprietary memory stick duo cards. The camera is available in Pink, Silver, and Black-bodied versions for purchase. Considering the spec sheet of this camera, the final words would be that camera is cheap enough but the shutter lags and to this extent, it may not be very acceptable to some. The best part that remains is the CCD sensor of megapixel count 16.1.
