Over all Review of Sony Cybershot DSC-W690 Point & Shoot
Sony Cybershot DSC W690 can be called a shadow version of DSC - WX150. It is slower than its predecessor but with many similar features. For starters, they share the same lens, the common ultra compact body structure, and a similar 3-inch LCD screen; though the only difference that resides is that the screen is half the resolution. After that, the features are satisfactory but nothing beyond that wows you. This point and shoot uses a 16megapixel CCD sensor rather than an 18megapixel Sony Exmor R CMOS sensor. On paper this might not look much to you but the importance of the sensor type here makes all the difference, with the CCD sensor dragging down the shooting performance and lagging in low light photo capturing. One more setback is the absence of the fast auto focus system the WX150 had. It zooms to a good 10X, more than convenient for good light shooting, the size of it will enable you to carry it with ease and in a carefree way. The camera more so offers a four picture effect modes, along with 360 panoramas and an optical steady shot feature. In the price of this camera, a lot of other companies like Nikon, Canon and even Sony offer compacts that present to you with more features.
Design and Build Quality
The camera possesses a traditional look, nothing too fancy and neither too unattractive. It has a basic layout with the 3-inch LCD screen gracing the rear of the camera with buttons on its right. The lens sits on the front while the battery/SD card slot is located at the bottom. The size of it is reasonable for you to carry it around in your palm, with dimensions being just 94.3 X 56.1 X 21.7mm and the weight; merely 142grams. So, as for the question of portability is concerned, the camera passes a big yes, and in conclusion, is stylish, well structured, and easy to carry.
Focus and Face Detection
It offers a few good focus modes from Multi AF to Center AF, Spot AF and even face detection technology. The camera has a few good features that truly display its focusing power, first with the automated ones, you get the iAuto (Intelligent Auto) mode where the camera does the thinking for you and recognizes scenes, situations, conditions to faces and adjusts the best settings. This results not only in the saving of time but also clearer pictures. In particular a mighty helpful feature for those photographers who are new or novices in photography. There is another iSCN mode that is, intelligent scene recognition mode that can detect from 33 different types of scenes. As for the face detection technology, the camera can detect up to eight individual faces and on the side adjust focus, exposure, and even white balance to conjure good, vivid, and admirable photos, especially the group photos or family pictures that are so dear to us.
Lens and Image Stabilization
The camera offers an amazing 10x optical zoom and that too in a super slim body assuring you of sharp photos and videos that could be taken anywhere, since it will fit your pocket or purse easily! The camera provides a 25mm – 250mm focal length, which is decent to let you shoot within the compact interiors or even larger landscapes and distant subjects. A great ease of capturing different environment as you go by. In order to counter blurs, Sony Cybershot DSC W690 has an Optical SteadyShot image stabilizer, this uses a built in gyro sensor that works to detect camera shakes and thus shifts the lens to provide vivid and clear photos. This is an amazing feature for amateur photographers.
Screen and Menus
A generous 3.0-inch Clear photo LCD screen with a 230K dots resolution graces the camera. The screen is sharp and previews your photos will ample coloring. Even though the size of the screen is remarkable, the screen does not work well when posed with direct light, for it gets difficult to see things off angle or even at sunlight’s direct reach on it. Apart from that, the camera’s simple operations are the best feature it withholds. There is a direct full user manual embedded in the camera for quick reach if you have some difficulty understanding something, apart from that the menu is simple and has easy access via the buttons provided. It won’t take time for a new user to get a hang of the camera’s interface.
The battery shares its compartment with the memory card, the slot is protected with a lockable door, thus proving it’s secured. On average, the camera is to last for a good 200 shots, though a lot use of zoom, video recording or using anything apart from automatic features will cut down the shot count. Sony Cybershot DSC W690 is compatible with an SD card or Memory Stick.
The camera records in 720p in an MP4 movie mode, it records in 1280 x 720 high definition movies at 30 fps, which is a standard format when you are working with a PC. It has full optical zoom availability as you record your videos, so giving you the freedom to focus on the minute little things one misses out due to distance and what not. These are in a small format, so you are not to be expected to have trouble while uploading them. Once transferred to your computer and connected to the internet, you can effortlessly upload your media to popular photo and video-sharing websites such as Photobucket and YouTube.
A powerful 16.1megapixel Super HAD CCD image sensor is placed at the heart of the camera that helps you capture the pretty images; with well enough contrast and clarity. Of course, with 16.1megapixels, you can create detailed enough photo-quality to print up to A3+ (13x19 inch) size and even crop your images.
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W690 has a good ultrawide-angle lens with a 10x zoom in a small slim body. It is also relatively easy to use.
