Over all Review of Sony DSC-HX20V Point & Shoot

Sony DSC-HX20V Point & Shoot Price

Overall Review

Sony DSC HX20V is one of the most technologically advanced cameras from Sony that comes with a good 25 mm wide angled Sony G lens which has a focal length of 4.45 mm – 89 mm or you can say that it has a equivalent of 25 mm – 500 mm. This highly popular lens comes with a fantastic optical zoom that measures 20x and the specifications are further enhanced by the further availability of a 40x clear image digital zoom. The camera very well works through what is a highly capable Exmor R CMOS image sensor that comes with Extra High Sensitivity technology giving the DSC-HX20V a remarkable optical sensor resolution of 18.2 megapixels. The body of Sony DSC HX20V is slim and features a very well embedded Cybershot designing and styling. When memory stick and battery are included the weight of this device decomes 254 gms which is highly reasonable, so this camera is highly portable is very easy to carry on all the travels. The beginning of a powerful BIONZ imaging processor, this CyberShot camera has the ability to record full HD videos with 1920 x 1080 resolution at 60 fps. All the captured images and videos can be viewed on the camera’s 3 inch XtraFine TruBlack LCD display with a brilliant display resolution of 921,600 dots which also doubles as the camera’s live viewfinder.

Design and Build Quality

When it comes to designing features Sony CyberSShot DSC HX20V is a tiny ultra zoom camera whose entire black body is a total mixture of metal and plastic. The camera is well put-together, though some of the design decisions are a bit frustrating. The buttons on the back of the camera are very small and tightly packed, while the handy custom button on the top is hard to reach. There's no room for your fingers when the flash is popped up, and Sony's placement of the USB port on the bottom of the camera is bit puzzling. Thankfully, these things were just minor annoyances, and didn't make using the camera more difficult. As you'd expect for a compact with an 20X optical zoom lens, the HX20V has an optical image stabilization system (which Sony calls Optical SteadyShot), which reduces the risk of blurry photos in low light, or at the telephoto end of the lens. In movie mode, an 'active' IS feature further reduces shake in your videos, with the ability to reduce motion in three directions, including rotational. To the upper-right of the lens is the camera's pop-up flash, which is released electronically. The working range of the flash is 0.4 - 7.1 m at wide-angle and 1.5 - 3.9 m at telephoto (at Auto ISO), both of which are above average. You cannot attach an external flash to the HX20V (the same is true for all of the competition).

Focus and Face Detection

The camera has a pair of AutoFocus Modes (Intelligent and Superior), both of which feature auto scene selection. They can tell when you're using a tripod, and even distinguish between adults, children, and infants. There's also an Easy mode available, which enlarges the font and greatly reduces the available options. The Superior Auto mode does everything that Intelligent Auto does (except for Easy mode), plus adds multi-shot layering through features like Anti Motion Blur, Handheld Twilight, and HDR. More on those in a bit. Both of the auto modes also allow you to use the Photo Creativity interface. The aperture control function lets you adjust the amount of light that passes through the lens of the camera, which on this CyberShot has an available range of f/3.2 - f/5.8. The autofocus function on this camera works using the contrast detection technology that gives the camera a macro focus range of 1 cm that helps you with all your close-up shots.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Sony Cybershot HX20V's lens is a real joy to use, with a 20x zoom in such a small package making this camera incredibly adaptable, with everything from ultra-wide landscapes to candid long-distance portraits within easy reach. The 25mm focal length provides an entirely new wide angle of view that can only increase your creativity. You won't want to go back to a "standard" 35mm zoom after using the 25mm lens on the DSC-HX20V, or even a 28mm one - 3mm at the wide-angle end really does make a big difference.

Screen and Menus

Sony Cybershot DSC HX20V is quite a humble device when it comes to screen, arge 3-inch, 921k-dot resolution LCD screen at the rear As you'd expect with a screen of that size on such a small camera, the HX20V has no optical viewfinder to fall back on in brighter lighting conditions.

This device is powered by the same NP-BG1 lithium-ion battery as many other Sony cameras. It also supports the NP-FG1 InfoLithium battery, which shows you exactly how many minutes of battery life you have left, instead of the the not-so-accurate standard battery meter. Both batteries hold 3.4 Wh of energy, which is on the low end for a travel zoom. The battery is good to go for 320 shots, which is comparatively more than most of its arch- rivals. Sony DSC-HX20V's battery is charged internally using the included AC adapter and micro USB cable. Charging speeds are relatively slow, with a full charge taking 175 minutes. If you want a faster charger, or just the ability to have a spare battery ready to go, then you'll want to pick up the BC-TRN or BC-TRN2 external charger.

Video Mode

One of the strongest features of this device, Sony HX20V is definitely a rare breed of cameras when it comes to Video recording. You can record videos at Full HD Quality which is 1920 x 1080 pixel at 60 frames per seconds. The mechanism of doing so is using AVCHD Progressive format which may or may not be valid in all devices or video editing suites. Sound is recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo, as you'd expect. If you don't need 1080/60p video (along with its 28 MBps bit rate), you can also choose from 1080/60i (at 17 or 24 MBps) or 1440 x 1080 @ 60i. The maximum recording time for all of those is around 29 minutes.

Behind the lens, hidden somewhere in the inside is an efficient 18.2 Megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor, which Sony brands as “Exmor R”. This is basically the highest resolution sensor that you can find in a compact device.
