Overall Review
Available in red, silver, black and blue, the Olympus VG 120 has a perfectly simple functioning to give magnificent images with its 5x wide optical zoom and image stabilization. The 14 megapixel camera sports a stylish and sleek body with many magic filters and user friendly interface. A latest magic filter included in this new Olympus VG 120 is the sparkle, along with the punk, pop art, pinhole, drawing, fish eye and soft focus. There are 14 scene modes to choose from and it delivers an ISO sensitivity of 80-1600. The Olympus VG 120 also supports in camera image editing and image processing and has auto white balance adjustment for adjusting perfect light in the pictures. The camera allows full HD movie recording and easy playback on its 3 inch wide LCD screen. The camera gives perfect pictures with its easy to use intelligent auto mode, face detection technology, auto focus tracking and shadow adjustment technology. For delivering magnificent images with perfect focusing, the camera uses a TTL iESP autofocus with contrast detection which can be set to intelligent auto mode, face detection or tracking mode or can be manually adjusted. The camera although has an internal memory of only 49MB , it is expandable using SD/SDHC memory cards for storing as many memories you desire. After every new shot there is a perfect shot preview and the Olympus VG 120 also supports date imprinting function to automatically imprint the date for even better memories. The camera also supports a very convenient USB supported battery charging so you can charge it anywhere with your laptop or PC.
Design and Build Quality
The Olympus VG 120 measures 96.4mm x 56.9mm x 19.1 mm and weighs only 120 grams making it a pocket perfect fit. It comes in red, blue, silver and black colors to choose from, thus making a perfect choice for everyone. The camera is a compact all rounder in a compact metallic design. The front of the camera has the internal flash with the 5x wide optical zoom lens. The top lodges the power button and the shutter button on a metal strip. The battery compartment lies on the undersurface of the camera along with the memory card slot. The rear has the 3 inch wide LCD monitor with the zoom lever and control pad. There are also dedicated buttons for video recording and playback and display the menu. Images can be easily discarded using the erase button on the bottom right. The menu can easily be navigated through, using the control pad.
Focus and Face Detection
The Olympus VG 120 uses a TTL iESP auto focus system with contrast detection. It allows adjusting the auto focus to different modes like iESP, Face Detection AF, Spot, AF Tracking. In the Standard mode, the focusing range is 0.6m to infinity in wideangle setting and 1.0 m to infinity in telephoto setting. In macro mode, the closes distance is 0.2m in wideangle setting and 0.6m in telephoto setting. The closest focusing distance is 7cm in the supermacro mode to give proper detailing to the images. The AF Tracking technology locks any fast-moving subject and continuously adjusts focus and brightness for the perfect capture. The camera boasts of an advanced face detection technology that allows spotting and focusing on a particular recognized subject and adjusting settings accordingly. The camera supports recognition of 16 faces in a frame!
Lens and Image Stabilization
The 5x wide optical zoom lens is constructed by incorporating 7 lenses into 5 groups amongst which there are 5 aspherical glass elements. The focal length of the lens comes out to be 4.7mm to 23.5mm with a maximum aperture of 2.8-6.5. The combined zoom of the Olympus VG 120 is 4x/20x with the optical zoom. The camera has a digital image stabilization feature to prevent image blur and deliver pictures of the best quality.
Screen and Menus
The camera has a TFT type LCD monitor of 3 inches with 230000 dots. The monitor comes with frame assistance and brightness adjustment up to 2 levels. The bright and large LCD monitor allows easy and convenient navigation through the menu available in 40 different languages and allows proper image and video playback. The camera also supports in camera editing and processing. Different shooting modes from an array of 14 options can be chosen for the perfect setting for different pictures. They include portrait, night, landscape, snow, sports etc. The menu can also be used to adjust the exposure compensation to +/- 2 EV / 1/3 steps. There are different modes like intelligent auto, Programme automatic, DIS mode, Scene Modes, Magic Filter, Panorama and movie for exposure settings. The magid filters like the special sparkle, pop art, pin hole, fish eye etc can be also be chosen from the user friendly menu.
Battery
The camera has LI-70B lithium ion battery for power supply. Use of a lithium battery decreases the overall weight although the availability of the battery sometimes becomes an issue.
Video Mode
High speed sequential shooting is done at 10.0 fps / 20 frames in 3MP mode. The camera allows full HD movie recording in 720p with effective zoom and playback. The videos are stored in AVI format in the 49 MB internal memory which can be expanded using SD/SDHC cards. The camera allows noise reduction, shading compensation and distortion compensation along with image resize and trimming. Movies can be viewed by Frame by frame, Fast forward or in Reverse playback mode. The sound system of the camera supports voice playback and recording in WAV format and also sports a speaker.
Sensors
The sensor which converts the image into electrical signal and is the eye of the camera is a CCD type in the Olympus VG 120. It 1 / 2.3 inch wide and has a full resolution of 14.5 megapixels. It uses a primary color filter array to give correct and exact pictures. The camera also has shadow adjustment technology for advanced adjustment to the image.
