Over all Review of Olympus TOUGH-8010
“Stylus”, as the name suggests, is mainly hardware over substance, is that the case with Olympus TOUGH 8010? Lets find out. In all Olympus TOUGH 8010 is definitely a special device which is built really well to resist a fall as high as two meters, the pressure of tens meters of water flowing directly at it and the heavy weight of a corpulent man and the cold of a tundra region, it is basically a device you can pretty much take anywhere. From beaches to swimming pools to deserts, coral reefs to mountain tops, just name it. Places and conditions in which shooting with a regular camera would be foolish or downright impossible, this device emerges as a victor. Yes! Olympus Tough 8010 is tough, really really tough. But despite being all hardware it is a normal Point and Shoot device too. The lens mount over it can develop a 28mm equivalent wide angle that makes this device better than many other compact devices and the array of scene modes that it has will definitely help you get a really good shot no matter what or where the subject of the image is. The usual conditions are ofcourse applied in this device.
Like most digital compacts, Olympus Tough 8010 likes good light and isn't really well suited to low-light photography and in addition to that, its extreme pixel density pushes its folding optics to their limits and beyond, meaning you don't get as much detail as you would expect based on its high pixel count. But if you are not one of those that make big enlargements out of their digital photographs, you are unlikely to be seriously disappointed by the images, particularly those taken at base ISO. They stand up to being printed at normal sizes pretty well.
Design and Build Quality
Olympus TOUGH-8010, as its name suggest is one tough camera. It works on extreme environment from temperature as low as 14 degree Fahrenheit to as deep to 33 deep in water and if that is not enough, take a load of this: the camera can withstand 220 pounds of pressure and can stay put even after dropping from high areas, as high as 6.6 feet! The camera has a rough retro outlook, not something you’d be awed by at the first glance and comes in silver or black. However all that said, the camera is not that light, with a weight of 215 grams and dimensions 99.0 x 63.5 x 23.88 mm, making it something you’ll feel in your pocket as you carry.
Focus and Face Detection
Olympus Tough-8010 has been given a camera with AF tracking ability, which is automatic and suits this camera well since it is made for hardcore uses and fast pace adventure. The tracker automatically and continuously adjusts the focus and brightness of the view so you can take your pictures in whatever difficult situation with ease. There is also Face detection property which tracks up to a great 12 faces and this too is automated considering it puts forth the best settings for your required portrait. All in the end these features work to give you accurate, precise and quality pictures so you enjoy.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Olympus Tough-8010 offers a dynamic and well 5 X optical zoom with a 28 mm – 140 mm i.e. 35 mm equivalent focal length camera. This comes with a maximum focal length of f/3.5 – f/5.1. Which is pretty decent given you can shoot large areas and that too up close. The camera helps you fight blurs with its brilliant Dual Image Stabilization technology. It is instilled to give you but obvious clear and shadow free photos. Also, if photos are taking within motion the camera directs you to HD videos. Together the Lens and Image stabilization work to give you proper, clear and magnificent photos.
Screen and Menus
Olympus Tough-8010 comes with a brilliant and quite large 2.7 inch LCD screen coupled with an extra wide angle viewing. The screen also comprises of an anti glare feature for better composition and easier shooting whilst in contact with bright and immediate sunlight. The camera can be navigated using touch, it also features a D-pad but it is more convenient tapping the camera for ease. For playback and shooting, you can tap the top of the camera twice. The entire interface is very easy to work through however the colors on its interface are rather not that pleasing. On an overall basis the camera system is not that hard to work about and you can enter the manual to discover more about it via the question marked dedicated button.
Olympus TOUGH 8010 uses SD/SDHC memory cards and has 2 GB memory storage enough for you to take hundreds of pictures, 140 approximately.
One touch and you start recording videos, it is high definition that is 1280 x 720p at 30 frames per second. It can be recorded in MPEG 4 format that is compatible with youtube. Optical is available during recording and the end result is pretty good. The only set back is that while zooming the clicks and machine voice are recording, that can end up being annoying. In video compartment competition in the market has beaten Olympup TOUGH-8010, like Panasonic LUMIX DMC TSc, it offers more format choices including all that this camera offers. Your videos can be played back on on HDTV cause of the available mini HDMI port built in the camera with CEC support. So HDTV that supports CEC can enable you to use remote while reviewing your photos and videos.
The camera uses a 14 MP ½.3 inch in high resolution CCD. Giving you best image quality and hence meaning that you can get clear poster sized photos without having to compromise on details and quality. The one thing that assures you the brilliance of this sensor is its ability to shoot good photos under bad lighting, it produces brilliant photos under. The only set back is the soft edges, but they are barely noticeable, so you can enjoy the photos nonetheless.
The good comes with the camera’s solid build and 12 MP of resolution. It also gives you plenty of creative easy to use shooting modes with sharp close up photos. And lastly, the LCD is very colorful and edgy.
The camera is a bit overpriced and the startup too is a bit slow. Sometimes noise show up in photos and the optical zoom could’ve have been larger than present.
