Packed with incredible features allowing simultaneous image and video capture, the Olympus SZ-31MR is a new Olympus product. This new camera has a 24x zoom being its most expensive part. It has the new his technology to give images close to real. This little camera measuring only 106.3mm x 69.2mm x 39.7 mm and weighing 244 grams has a metal exterior and a LCD touch panel monitor with 920000 dots measuring 7.6cm. it comes with frame assistance and protection panel with brightness adjustment of up to +/- 2 levels. The Olympus SZ-31MR sports a primary color filter array with a ½.3inch CMOS sensor having 16 Megapixels. The lens of the 24x optical zoom has a focal length 4.5mm-108.0mm having a 2.0-6.9 aperture. With a TTL iESP auto focus with contrast detection supporting iESP, Face Detection AF, Spot, AF Tracking, the  camera has a focusing range of 0.1m to infinity in wide and 0.4m to infinity in tele. 
 
 The exposure system of the camera works in different modes including the intelligent auto, P + Movie clip, Scene Modes, Magic Filter, Panorama, Movie, Multi-Recording, 3D Photos, Beauty & Make-up with a Shutter speed of 1/4 - 1/1700 s / < 4 s and an Exposure compensation of +/- 2 EV / 1/3 steps. The camera has a image stabilizer and uses advanced Face Detection Technology and Shadow Adjustment Technology. Design and Build Quality

The camera has a metallic body and measures only 106.3mm x 69.2mm x 39.7 mm, weighing 244 grams. The 3inch touchscreen has a crystal-clear 920,000-dot resolution but lacks a GPS for tagging the place. The top of the camera has a shutter button with the zoom toggle and a mode dial. There is a small switch to release the pop up flash. It has an elegant rear with all buttons neatly arranged on the right side of the screen. There is a dedicated record button on top and a playback and menu button on the bottom. The camera has a conventional and a simple to use layout with an user friendly interface. The weight being evenly distributed makes it portable. The Olympus SZ-31 MR is available in options of black and grey. 

Focus and Face Detection

The lens of the camera has a focal length of 25mm – 600 mm giving an Optical zoom of 24×. The camera supports TTL iESP auto focus with contrast detection which can be set to iESP, Face Detection AF, Spot, AF Tracking. The focusing range is 0.1 m to infinity in wide and 0.4m to infinity in tele. It is the same for macro mode while in supermacro mode the closest distance is 3cm. The camera has a Contrast Detector and AF illuminator. The camera however lacks manual focusing option. The shutter and the autofocus motors are however quite noisy. The camera also has advanced face detection technology which detects recognized face in the screen and adjust focus accordingly. It also keeps a track of the subject.

 

Lens and Image Stabilization

The Olympus SZ- 31 MR has a 24 x optical zoom made possible by a lens with an aperture of 3.0 to 6.9. The lens is made by including 11 lenses in 10 groups having 3 aspherical elements and 3 ED glass elements. The Shutter speed is 1/4 - 1/1700 s / < 4 s and Exposure compensationof the camera is +/- 2 EV / 1/3 steps. It has a dual Image Stabiliser of sensor shift type for still images  with Advanced Face Detection Technology, Shadow Adjustment Technology and Pet Detection.

Screen and Menus

The camera has a LCD touch panel with 920000 dots and live guide. Measuring 7.6cm the monitor has frame assistance and protection panel with brightness adjustment up to 2 levels. The menu is user friendly with guidelines for a perfect picture in 39 languages and different modes easily selected using the convenient navigation pad. 

Battery

With an internal memory of 59MB expandable using SD/SDHC/SDXC cards, the camera uses a Lithium-ion rechargeable LI-50B battery with an internal charger. A high speed 2.0 USB and type D HSMI connectivity channels are also provided in the camera. It supports Eye-fi card for uploading images instantaneously in a wi-fi hotspot. However it lacks remote control and environmental protection.

Video Mode

The Multi Motion Movie IS (Image Stabilization for video) eliminate the blur whilst the camera allows simultaneous shooting and recording at the same time. There are Twelve Magic Art Filters which give a wide range of special effects to the Full HD movie recording in a 1080 60p quality in quick movie time JPEG format, MPEG-4 and H.264. The camera also allows image editing like cropping and resizing. The Olympus SZ-31MR with iHS technology offers three new Magic Art Filters. Reflection, Fragmented and Dramatic. Slideshows can be incorporated with different music and transition effects. The high end compact traveler zoom camera has a built in flash with a range of 9.3m but lacks an external flash. For voice recording and playback there is a microphone and a speaker.
