Over all Review of Nikon D5200 SLR (Body Only)

Nikon D5200 SLR (Body Only) Price

Overall Review

Two months after the release of the fabulous D600, Nikon produced another DLSR to the Indian imaging market, named D5200. Made available in three colors, Red, Black and Bronze, Nikon D5200 has been priced reasonably, over the performance it delivers. It has an impressive 24.1MP sensor that makes it to get classed in top-end cameras by the brand. It shares the processor of flagship model D4, EXPEED 3 engine. One can only imagine the quality rich images produced by Nikon D5200 SLR. Moreover the ISO sensitivity ranges from 100-6400, it can also be expanded to Hi-2, 25600 ISO, so almost any light condition can be handled. The camera is quite easy to use, you only need to learn what function does what as you keep it in your hands. One laudable feature that has been incorporated from its numeric named predecessor is the flexible monitor. Yes, the LCD can be flipped out like page of a small note book and can even be turned at different angles so that you are able to frame your in any position. Speaking of framing, Nikon D5200 isnt also behind in focusing. The enhanced 39-point autofocus lets you focus with precision. Smart face detection and with smart tracking solve half of your shoot purposes. When Live View button is turned on, the phrase “what you see, is what you get” gets held true. If you dont wish to be behind the camera then just link the optional wireless mobile adapter and have the device controlled remotely upto 20 meters by your smartphone, supporting Android or iOS operating system. There is more to it, incase you wish to keep a location record of where the pictures were shot, the optional GPS unit will do the job for you. When it comes to videos, this feature is as exciting as that of quality stills. You can shoot at FULL HD with a lengthy range of frame rates. The in-built microphone catches audio in stereo mode. You can attach a number of NIKKOR lenses spanning from zoom lenses to wide-angle lenses. The mentioned features make D5200 a home of possibilities to your imaging imagination.

Design and Build Quality

Build quality of Nikon D5200 SLR resembles to that of Nikon D5100. When seen closely, the drive mode button on top plate distinguishes D5200. The camera's specs reveal that it is 5 grams lighter than its elder. Users with small hands find there is enough space upon the rubber grip to place three fingers. As in D5100, the variangle LCD screen is also incorporated here. The GUI (Graphic User Interface) here has been updated and it looks more cleaner than before. There are fewer buttons than D5100 and most of the settings are adjusted using screen display. There is 'I' button at the back, which when pressed display information of the current scene, reading further enhancements can be made. OK button finals a setting.

Focus and Face Detection

To reset anything around AF system, to have to get back to the menu system, even to alter the automatic AF area selection to manual one, you have to go down pressing many buttons while concentrating on LCD. The All-auto-area focus can work smart but at times it does begin to focus at the background. In dark, it focuses well too due the AF illuminator. Face detection feature is simply impressive in Nikon D5200 SLR.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Nikon D5200 has an F-mount that can be attached to most of the NIKKOR lenses. The use of DX format sensor results in reduced field of view by 1.5 times, therefore, DX 18-55mm VR (Vibration Reduction) kit lens delivers focal range of 27-83mm. D5200 does not possess built-in AF motor(removed for the sake savings on weight, cost and size) needed to auto-focus lenses that have gotten older by time. Typically the cam comes with Nikkor DX 18-55mm VR lens. Image stabilization is provided by Nikon D5200 SLR with almost every compatible lens.

Screen and Menus

Nikon D5200 SLR share menu system of other DLSRs in the line-up. Menus are easier to understand and navigate through. To distinguish, sub-menus are color coded. Playback menu lets you adjust your playback features and slideshows. Shooting menu holds settings for size and quality of image. Style of picture to be taken, noise reduction and video specs are among other inclusions. A green colored superscript denotes default setting. Under custom setting menu, you get six color coded classes , an asterisk gets tagged to any setting changed from its default. In setup menu, you can format SD card, manage brightness and choose NTSC and PAL modes. To apply effects to images shot and make RAW to JPEG conversions, you'd have to open retouch menu. In recent settings you can see the settings most preferred by you and my menu lets you add, remove and rank items.

Battery

Compartment beneath the body holds a rechargeable EN-EL14 lithium-ion battery, rated at 1030mAh. Under CIPA conditions, the cam can take 500 shots. Remaining battery get displayed on-screen only through a three segment indicator in Nikon D5200 SLR.

Video Mode

Nikon D5200 SLR is able to shoot videos at 1080p Full HD at 60i, 50i, 30p, 25p or 24p fps. From setup menu you can choose wether you want videos to be shot in NTSC or PAL complying frame rates. Live output with quality 1080 60i can be seen uncompressed while its being recorded over the HDMI link. Audio comes in via built-in stereo microphone and an external stereo mic, upto you to choose can also be added. Video codec with which your videos come compressed is H.264/MPEG-4. Maximum time length to shoot videos is nearly 30 minutes.

To shoot, you would first have to engage live view through lever that sits next to mode dial. Then you can press the RED button on shoot on. If manual movie settings are turned on, then shutter speed and ISO can be selected manually by rotating mode dial to M. If turned off shutter speed and aperture get set automatically, even though in manual mode.

Sensors

Nikon D5200 SLR sports sensor of megapixel count 24.1 and produces images with maximum dimensions of 6000x4000(pixels). Image data gets saved in JPEG files under any of three compression ratios, fine, normal and basic; 1:4, 1:8, 1:16 respectively. Large and detailed files are usually around 10-12Mb in size. RAW data can be recorded in .NEF formats. ISO ranges from 100 to 25600.

Pros

- Image comes out be of rich and detailed quality.

- Nikon D5200 SLR has quick autofocus.

- You can shoot still continuously at 5 frames per second.

- Vari-angle LCD lets you frame your scene from any position you are in.

- Videos at 1080i can be filmed at 60fps.

- Wi-Fi and GPS are optional.

- User interface is is quite comprehensible.

Cons

- Viewfinder is a small pentamirror. Autofocus cannot be acheived with screw-drive lenses.

- Direct controls are few in Nikon D5200 SLR.

Announced back on 06 November 2012, Nikon D5200 is more of an upgrade to Nikon D5100 than a stand alone new product. It is a half frame DSLR. The maximum image size can reach upto 6000x4000 pixels. Feature by which D5100 become quite has been without any miss incorporated here, that is, Vari-angle screen. There are seven effects modes: high and low key, night vision, miniature effect, colour sketch etc. Lets take brief view at the key features.

. Optical viewfinder.

Nikon D5200 SLR can be controlled remotely with a wireless mobile adaptor.

. Stills can be taken continually at 5fps.

. ISO senstivity can begins at 100 and can be expanded 25600.

Optional GPS feature tracks exact location, where the shots were taken.

2016 pixel RGB metering sensor allows camera for the scene recognition, optimum exposure, autofocus and white balance before the shutter is released.

D5100 has already been giving back good gains to Nikon's line-up of DSLRs. The next big thing to it was announced back in 2012. Yes, Nikon D5200 SLR, is doing pretty well in the photo-market, as it delivers images of appreciable 24.1MP quality images, all credits to EXPEED 3 engine, the same device that has made D4, a flagship model to Nikon. It is fairly well in all lighting conditions due to high ISO sensitivity 100-6400, which can be expanded as well to Hi-2 ISO 25600. The entire camera has been brought up in a way that an amateur, enthusiastic shooter can become a pro within a few days with Nikon D5200 SLR. The best feature here is the flip-out flexible high-resolution LCD monitor, to get any, any angle, the LCD can swivel around. Though the camera has 39-point autofocus, it gives focus as good as 51-point AF, has smart-face detection and tracking. You can get astonishing, portraits, background blur and laudable action shots. Those who look into LCD monitor for framing can press the Live View button and take ample of time to frame your shot noticing the smallest detail. If you don't want to be behind the scenes, then link Nikon D5200 SLR with WU-1 wireless mobile adapter, upto 20 metres distance. Now with your Android and iOS device you can shoot with all the more ease. Moreover, you can appended your shot info with its location with GP-1 GPS unit, which comes as an option.

With D5200 you can record videos at FULL HD with laudable clarity within a wide ambit of frames. The autofocus tracking does all the work of keeping your object in motion, in focus. For sound, it has in-built stereo microphone. Nikon D5200 SLR is compatible to a wide range of NIKKOR lenses. Be it a zoom lens or a wide angle lens. Active D-Lighting has its role in shooting. It cares for detail in shadowy as well as highlight area. You can select from low, normal, off, high, extra high and auto. As stated, its image-processor causes less color shift even when the strength level is taken higher. The processor runs with real time high-speed. EXPEED 3 further enhances color. Active D-lighting does not require to combine images and so processing of that of HDR doesnt go on here. Again Nikon's cameras are quite easy to use and one neednt to be a pro first to use them.
