Over all Review of Nikon D5100 DSLR Body

Nikon D5100 DSLR Body Price

Overall Review

Nikon D5100 SLR comes with a bundle of professional features that makes the camera a joy to work with. It is graced by a smart 3-inch vari-angle LCD monitor that displays your pictures and videos that turn out to be brilliant, all credit to the high resolution 16.2 MP DX format CMOS and EXPEED 2 image processing engine. More to this, the camera can record HD videos in full 1920 x 1080p HD videos, the AF works within this too. The overall AF is impressive with a couple of modes to work with. Furthermore, there is a VR: Vibration Reduction that comes with all NIKKOR lenses. The creative aspect of the camera is explored through plenty of effect modes, from Selective color to Night Vision, High key, Miniature effect, Silhouette and Scene Auto Selector. Also, the ISO range is pretty impressive, for it ranges from 100 – 6400 that can be extended, helping you in almost every light condition.

Design and Build Quality

The Nikon D5100 SLR is a robust camera that feels quite firm in the hand especially because of its dynamic grip. The buttons are easy to operate as they are placed traditionally. The mode dial is at the top, and all the features are managed via the PASM exposures. The LCD screen is articulated and 3inches wide and can flip out from the left sided hinge. It isquite sturdy and bulky to carry with dimensions of 128mm x 96.9mm x 78.7mm.

Focus and Face Detection

The camera comes with an efficient AF mode that is active, both in Live view and while shooting full HD videos. It plays a vital part in keeping focus and balance, in your photography/videos. There are 11 focus points, including one cross type sensor and an AF assist illuminator; these encompass the entire frame to capture your subject precisely. There are different AF-area mode that includes Single point AF, Dynamic area AF, Auto Area AF and 3D tracking, in which, the camera gets together with the Scene Recognition System to maintain your desired subject at focus, even if you alter the composition. Nikon D5100 SLR also comes with the feature to detect faces and can recognize 35 faces together! This gives you room for capturing large group photos.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Nikon D5100 SLR is an efficient device which can accommodate almost all NIKKOR lenses, and the DX format sensor results in the field of view being reduced by 1.5 times. Therefore, the standard DX 18-55mm VR kit lens delivers an effective focal range of 27-83mm. As the case with most of the Nikon DSLRs, there will be a need of recent lenses to give full support to the focusing and metering modes of the device. To be on the safer edge, you may need a Type G or D AF (including AF-S and AF-I) NIKKOR kit to support all the functions that this device can undergo, which includes one of the most decent 3D Matrix coloring system.

Screen and Menus

Nikon D5100 SLR has been blessed with a very bright and vari-angle 3.0 inch LCD screen. It opens up horizontally to a maximum 180 degrees and, can flip down and up from 180 degrees to 90 degrees. The screen has a brilliant 912,000-dot high-resolution feature that allows you more freedom to take shots whether from waist level, as a candid live view or for an overhead shot. You can review pictures and HD videos alike, and compose with much ease, while using the Live View. The menu is definitely easy to navigate.

Nikon D5100 SLR uses the rechargeable Li-Ion EN – EL14 battery that lasts for 660 shots on a complete charge and more than enough for a person to last the entire day. It is also compatible with SDHC and SDXC memory cards for you to store your photographs and videos to be preserved.

Video Mode

With a single click, you have in your hands, a high definition movie-recording camera. Nikon D5100 SLR has the ability to record 1920 x 1080p HD videos at 30fps wherein, the auto focus is working in the video mode via the contrast – detect AF. The camera gives you ease of use as and when you set it to a full time serve AF (AF-F) and also, activate subject tracking AF, with which your camera shall keep up focus with your subject at all times. Buoyant in camera editing features, Nikon D5100 allows users to save single frames as JPEG photos or even eliminate frames from the end or start from the video. The camera comes with a built-in joist for stereo audio recording, this is through Stereo Microphone ME-1, and is available differently. The advantage to the separate mic is that the noise caused by lens vibrations during AF cannot be recorded so, your video stays noise-less.

Akin to the high-end D7000 SLR camera, Nikon D5100 SLR too, is armed with the same DX format CMOS image sensor, 16.2MP. It also comes with an EXPEED 2 image-processing engine confirming that you get incredible pictures with admirable precision. To help you in low-lighted areas, there is the standard ISO range from 100 to 6400 but can be increased to Hi2 that is, 25600 equivalent and most certainly helpful for indoor or evening shoots. Further, the HDR that is, High Dynamic Range captures two shots of different exposures as you release the shutter button, but then combine the two shots with best result.  Most image processing features are sharp and stand out in low-lit environment, whilst tackling shadows and giving you the best possible high quality photos.

Nikon D5100 SLR comes with a great flip out LCD screen, which is very effective. The image quality is very impressive, the ergonomics are pretty cool and the intuitive button layout even better. The camera gives plenty of effects and automatic modes, being ideal for both beginners and professionals

There is no manual audio override and is disappointing to see no wireless flash control. The battery cover at the base feels flimsy too, in the Nikon D5100 SLR.

Announced way back in April month of the year 2011, Nikon D5100 SLR was brought out to refresh non-pro DSLR range. Initially the pricing made it clear for buyers that it sits amicably in between beginner and pro end models from Nikon. The camera has now been given a successor, D5200, which is logically perceived as a follow on to D5100. The introduction of D5200 has completed new mid-range and entry level DSLR fleet based on APS-C sensor. D5100 has always attracted gaze of enthusiast photographers and has been very much useful and handy for them. With more increments in D5100 we have D5200 and people would look up to this new entry from the company still, D5100 maintains its slot firmly. Nikon D5100 SLR features an all-new horizontal swing, LCD monitor, termed as vari-angle. The video can be recorded in Full-HD format and, has an easy to navigate menu. The shots can be composed in many positions since the liberty provided by the camera's physical controls is impressive. The video can be captured in 1080p format and still can be shot at 16.2MP. Nikon continues to raise the excitement as it has increased its D-series line up by introducing one more model, Nikon D5100 SLR. The camera is capable of providing you an excellent picture quality with a good noise profile. It has a streamlined shooting design with appropriate features to enhance the strength of the camera. The camera is powered by an EXPEED 2 processor to provide you an amazing picture quality with its 16.2 mega pixel camera. It also allows you to record videos in full HD with an output of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It also has a CMOS sensor rather than the CCD sensor to provide a amazing picture quality. The major benefit of CMOS over CCD is that it has high noise immunity and low static power consumption. It comes with a Nikon F mount lens and has both Auto and Manual focus. The Auto focus includes its TTL phase detection with 11 focus points. It also has the 3D tracking facility to automatically focus moving objects by predicting their movement.
The LCD of the camera is 3.0 inch TFT type and has a variable viewing angle, so that you can capture photos and record videos at different angles. The camera has an Eye-level pentamirror type viewfinder with 0.78 times magnification and 95% of field view. It has a image display resolution of 921000 dots and video display resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The camera has a lever placed at the top to quickly switch to the Live Mode with just one move. We can also switch between the video recording and photo mode by just pressing one button which is placed next to the shutter release. The ISO of this digital SLR ranges from 100 to 6400. We can also increase it to unbelievably high 25600 ISO for good quality in the lower lighting. The camera also has an in-built flash with several sync modes. The dust reduction technique includes its image sensor cleaning and airflow control, to increase the durability of the sensor. The new HDR feature added in the camera, captures two shots at a time at different exposures and merge them to give a perfect picture. The camera has Li-Ion battery which is capable of taking 660 shots when fully charged. Though this camera has really good features and is fast but still it lags behind its class in performance.
