Nikon D3200 DSLR Review
Nikon the top brand in the photography world, after the huge success of the sensation Nikon D3100, has brought another dynamite to the Camera Market across the world. The Nikon D3200 is a light weight device weighing at 505g with battery and memory card, and is really compact with the dimensions of Width 125mm, Height 96mm and length 76.5mm. The camera is totally a eye turner and a sensation in the photography world with optical Sensor Resolution of a whooping 24.2 Megapixels. The camera screen fancies TFT LCD display for better vision and clarity of the user with the screen size of 3 inch and a gigantic Image Display Resolution of 921,000 dots. It also facilitates ViewFinder with specification of Eye-level Pentamirror. The Video Display Resolution provided is 1920 x 1080 at 30p. The Nikon D3200 DSLR is priced at Rs. 31283 in Indian Market.
Nikon D3200 DSLR is provided with a CMOS sensor with size 23.2mm x 15.4mm. The camera also fancies Auto Focus with TTL Phase detection and manual focus with allows even better and user friendly interface between the camera and the operator. Talking about battery, for power supply the camera possesses a EH-5b AC Adapter and a EN-EL14 Li-ion battery which is also a rechargeable one.
The microphonal interface provided is Monoaural while the USB interface is Hi-speed USB. The interface in the audio video sector is Video Output (NTSC, PAL). The memory of the camera can be upgraded and SD / SDHC UHS-I Card / SDXC types of memory cards can be brought under use. 6016 x 4000 pixels of image sizing can be operated upon. After that many features, it is just safe to say that Nikon has been able to bring in another masterpiece in the market.
Overall Review
With Nikon 3200, the multinational camera giant has nearly doubled the image capturing resolution of the predecessor, the 24 megapixel Nikon 3200, after its launch became the DX body in Nikon DSLR with the highest resolution. For an entry level offering, this indeed is a very bold statement and in fact, it becomes one which will put Nikon D3200 DSLR directly in the top of budget DSLR mounts, at least such will be the case when discussing about resolution. Canon’s budget DSLR Canon EOS 1100 appears really weak when you compare it with Nikon 3200 and for the same senor on a Sony device you probably need to empty your pockets a little more for models like Sony NEX-7 and Sony SLT A-77 or A65. But obviously, the entire functioning of the camera does not depend only on sensor resolution, Nikon D3200 also comes with the Expeed 3 processor which adds on 4 frames per second continuous shooting speed, despite the formation of large files. The screen of this camera has also seen a massive increase in resolution to 921k pixels and when it comes to video recording, Nikon D3200 is now an even more versatile camera which features new and improved 1080p Full HD video recording at frame rates 24/25/30 frames per seconds, control, manual control over audio levels and an external mic socket. The user interface of this device is frankly much better than what its predecessor had to offer. There has been the reintroduction of front and back IR remote sensors the new Wu-1a optional wireless mobile adapter which allows you to control the camera and transmit images using an Android handset and an iOS version is still on the go.
Design and Build Quality
Talking about design and build ergonomics of this device, Nikon D3200 measures 125mm x 96mm x 76.5mm and weighs 505 grams along with card, this makes Nikon D3200 weigh exactly equal to Nikon D3100, although the latter in 2mm less deep. You can hardly sort a difference from front, the same old efficiently programmable function button through which direct access to image quality/size, ISO sensitivity, white balance or Active D-lighting settings can be got. The flash button along with popping up the in-built flash when held up also allows flash mode selection by the use of command dial. A little disappointing feature here however is to discover that there is still no optical Depth of Field preview, a feature that the enthusiasts have been wailing over for ears, but Nikon has never included it in its DSLRs, although Canon EOS 550D is one famous device which offers it. On the sides of the mounted lens an AF assist lamp/Red-eye reduction lamp and on the handgrip itself you can just make out one of two IR receivers for restriction operation with the use of the ML-L3 while the other one secures a place in the left of the viewfinder.
Focus and Face Detection
Nikon D3200 works on the same exposure modes as its precursor. Once you take a sneak peak at the mode dial, you know that it reveals PASM exposure modes helpfully met with a white outline, this is followed by six scene mode positions, flash off, full Auto and finally the Guide mode which will be discussed about more in the end of the handling section.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Nikon D3200 is typically shipped with the AF-S Nikkor DX 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 G VR Kit lens in the box. Here, VR stands for Vibration Reduction which is Nikon’s lens based image stabilisation system. As such Nikon D3200 has no in-built image stabilisation, so whether the device will have image stabilisation or not totally depends on the lens you use. With the help of DX format sensor, there is 1.5x reduction in the field of view, hence the effective range becomes 27-83 mm.
Screen and Menus
The screen that occupies most of the rear of Nikon 3200 is still a fixed 3 inch LCD but the resolution has increased dramatically from 230k pixels of the precursors to huge 921k pixels, a huge upgradation!! This puts Nikon D3200 almost at par with Canon EOS 550D, as such, this is an excellent screen and seriously a very big improvement over what was prevailing earlier, but once you put both the cameras side by side, Canon simply looks classier. The reason mainly is because of the shape of screen; the screen of Nikon D3200 screen is 4:3 shaped while the screen of Canon EOS 550D has a screen ratio of 3:2 which is slightly wider. Now since, both the images are formed in 3:2, the entire screen is covered in Canon, whereas they are a lot smaller on Nikon, leaving black bands over and below the image.
Battery
Nikon D3200 can work with SD, SDHC and SDXC and UHS-1 cards and uses the same EN-EL14 battery as its predecessor. This is located in the handgrip and accessed via a door on the bottom plate which can be opened when the camera is tripod-mounted. The battery provides enough power for a very respectable 540 shots, though if you use Live View a lot that figure will drop.
Video Mode
Nikon D3100 was the first entry-level Nikon DSLR to offer Live View and video recording. Nikon D3200 inherits more than its predecessor's movie capabilities introducing new 1080p25 and 1080p30 modes to add to the earlier 1080p24. At the lower 720p resolution the same 24, 25 and 30 frames per second rates are available. As on the Canon EOS 550D, which offers the same HD recording modes, 25fps modes are selectable when the video mode is set to PAL, switch to NTSC and you have access to the 30fps modes; the 24fps option is available whether the video mode is set to PAL or NTSC.
Sensors
Nikon D3200's 24 megapixel CMOS sensor produces images with a maximum size of 6016x4000 pixels. This is a major upgrade with an extra 10 megapixels over its predecessor and makes the D3200 the highest resolution DX body in the Nikon Range.
Pros
- Extremely high resolution
- Full 1080p HD video, external mic input
- Faster continuous shooting than D3100
Cons
- JPEG image quality
- No in-body autofocus motor
- No direct-access ISO button
- Most expensive
