Capture those cheeky smiles, that adventurous trip of yours and all those loving moments with the fantastic Nikon Coolpix S8100 . Speedy performance, inspiring image quality, excellent functioning makes this compact camera worth its price. Its design is quite similar to Nikon Coolpix S8000 but offers better and improved features. It is blessed with a high-speed backside-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor for faster shooting shooting performance and better low light photo quality. It measures 4.1in x 2.4in x 1.2in and weighs 7.4 ounces. It is comprised of 3-inch LCD and offers a resolution of 921K dots.It features 10x zoom, lens of aperture f3.5-5.6 and focal length 30-300mm (35mm equivalent). It doesn't have a viewfinder, a bit disappointing though. But it promises better quality pictures with the help of burst shooting capable of up to 10 frames per second. Though its sensitivity settings range from ISO 160 to ISO 3,200, the S8100 produces the best images at ISO 200. Photos clicked on either side of this sensitivity look soft, but can be sharpened with photo-editing software. It sets your ISO between the range of 160-400 through its Fixed Range Auto option, which is good since this is where it performs best. The two highest ISOs - 1,600 and 3,200, offered by this compact device should probably only be used in emergencies, mainly because the colors get faded away and the noise reduction makes the target appear smoky.
It also features BSI CMOS sensors like most of the compact cameras. The S8100 has multi shot modes for improving low-light photos of landscapes and portraits. It comes fitted with 12.1 MP camera for an outstanding photography experience. Press the shutter release just once, and the camera will click several photos and then combine them to improve blur from hand shake and will reduce noise. The Night Landscape mode is noticeable, though at full size some chroma noise can be seen. The Night Portrait mode takes shots with and without flash and binds them up into nicely and fairly exposed shots. This device offers a striking resolution of 4,000x3,000 pixels for still images and 1,920x1,080p at 30fps for videos. It supports JPEG/H.264 AAC (.MOV) file format(still/video). Its 1080p movie capture is really appreciating and is a big reason behind its success. Video quality is inspiring with a good HD pocket video camera; good enough for Web use. The zoom offered by this camera does work while recording, but you will hear the lens focusing in your movies which unfortunately could add a constant clicking sound.
Further, it comes carrying CIPA rated Li-ion rechargeable battery which is capable of taking 210 shots before charging it again. Talking about storage capacity, it is provided with SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards.
Just like Nikon Coolpix S6000, it also features two auto modes on this camera. One is Nikon's Scene Auto Selector. Settings can be adjusted according to the preferred scene type chosen among six common scene types. If the scene doesn't match any of those, it is set on default as a general-use Auto. You can alter ISO, white balance, and exposure compensation as well as light metering, auto focus area and mode, and continuous shooting modes. Apart from these, Nikon has also added some extra controls to this device through which one can change hue (color tone) and vividness (saturation), with adjustable sliders. The slider settings get stored in the camera's memory for the Auto mode, so they remain the same even when the device is turned off. Nikon's Smart Portrait System, used in either Portrait or Night Portrait modes combines blink detection, smile-activated shutter release, red-eye fix, skin softening, and Face Priority AF features into one mode. It also offers 12 selectable scene modes which may resemble to the type of scene you are capturing. All of the scenes are standards like Portrait and Landscape. There is a Panorama Assist that lines up the series of shots and combines them with the help of a software that comes along with it. Though the device is not overloaded with features, but it surely carries all the necessary assets which sets it apart from all the other cameras of its kind.
