Nikon Coolpix S6200 Review
Overall Review
Nikon Coolpix S6200 is a new travel zoom camera which features a 10x zoom lens and a flexible focal range which measures 25-250mm. The key features of Nikon Coolpix S6200 include a 16 CCD sensor, 2.7 inch LCD screen, 720p high-definition movies with stereo sound, lens-shift vibration reduction, a range of special effects, 1.2fps burst mode, and advanced Night Landscape and Portrait modes. Available in the color combinations of red, pink, blue and black, Nikon Coolpix S6200 now features a longer and slimmer 10x lens, which can pretty much capture everything ranging from a wide landscape to close up and personal candid shots and the best part is that all this is done without increasing the weight of the device significantly. In the case of Nikon Coolpix S8200 which is like a big brother to this device, the delivered image quality is still just above average and delivers fascinating results when it comes to noise which ranges from ISO 100-400 and becomes a little too apparent at ISO800, when you choose faster settings like ISO 1600 or ISO 3200 you will quickly realise that it is a waste. Stand out features are a few and not really “stand out” when you compare them with other rivals, 2.7 inch screen, 720p movies, 1.2fps burst shooting and a range of special effects these are all really average features for this class of camera. There are brilliant Night Landscape and Portrait modes but they seriously cannot make up for the lack of “oomph” factor Nikon Coolpix S6200. So here we have, not the best of all Point and Shoot cameras, which certainly does not offer too many headline features, instead is the “Jack of all traits” which is not a bad quality at all. If you want an underrated camera which performs efficiently without really creating too much fuzz, Nikon Coolpix S6200 is well worth considering as an alternative.
Design and Build Quality
Nikon Coolpix S6200 flaunts a decent yet very appealing design, the body is all plastic finish and the glossy rectangular finish has the word “CLASS” written all over it. The coating is rubberised so as to increase the grip on the camera. The device is just 25.4mm thick and hence Nikon Coolpix S6200 is a considerably thin compact which features a 10x zoom lens, but this is a worthwhile fact to be noted that it measures over 60mm deep when the zoom is fully extended and is working on the 10x zoom condition. Nikon Coolpix S6200 weighs 160 grams and is also a light camera which fits really easily in the palm of your hand and slips really comfortably in the pocket of your shirt or jeans. There is a Scene/ Camera button on the rear which gives access to a wide variety of shooting modes. Well, in addition to the default Auto mode on the device, there are also 19 scene modes to choose from which include a quick clever Scene Auto Selector, which automatically recognizes the scene in your picture from 6 presets which include modes like Portrait, Landscape, Night Portrait, Night Landscape, Closeup and Backlight and adjusts the camera settings accordingly. These modes were known previously as well, what is new this time is the Effects mode which can shoot both images and movies using a special effect such as Soft Focus or Sepia. Along with the Scene/ Camera button is the Playback button. One can always easily use one of the in-camera filters so as to enhance tour images once you have taken them, with these filters including Screen, Fisheye and Miniature Effect.
Focus and Face Detection
The face priority AF of Nikon Coolpix S6200 can detect upto 12 faces in a scene just so long as they are looking directly towards the camera, while the In-camera Red-Eye Fix automatically fixes the picture to remove the red eye difficulties. The focus range of Nikon Coolpix S6200 varies from Approx. 50 cm (1 ft. 8 in.) to infinity at wide-angle settings and approx 1.1m (3ft 6 in.) to infinity at telephone settings while in Macro mode the focus range varies from approx. 10 cm (3.9 in.) to infinity at the widest angle settings.
Lens and Image Stabilization
There is a 10x lens which dominates the front portion of Nikon Coolpix S6200 and offers a really wide focal range from 25-250mm at 35 mm equivalent. The unbranded lens mount has a reasonably fast maximum aperture of f/3.2 at wide angle but the maximum aperture at f/5.8 is really slow. The slim in built flash of the device is positioned to the top right, when looking from the front. There is an AF assist lamp too, that completes the front of Nikon Coolpix S6200 totally. In practice, Nikon S6200 is very quick to focus irrespective of the lighting conditions provided or which end of the zoom range the user is using.
Screen and Menus
The rear of Nikon Coolpix S6200 is quite traditional in design with all the control features located in the right of the LCD screen. The size of this screen is really moderate and comes with the entry level 230k dot pixel resolution, with five levels of brightness, an anti-reflection coating and a fairly wide viewing angle. To the right of the LCD screen is a handy dedicated button for starting and stopping movie recording.
Battery
Nikon Coolpix S6200 runs on Li-Ion rechargeable battery which can be charged using the USB socket on a computer or via the main power using the included AC adapter, CIPA has claimed that camera manages to shoot just under 250 shots and thankfully the anti-shake system doesn’t reduce the battery life too much.
Video Mode
Nikon Coolpix S6200 can record 720p HD quality video complete with stereo sound. It offers 1280x720, 960x540 and 640x480 pixel movies all at 30 fps and saved in the Quicktime .mov format. An HDMI Mini port allows the S6200 to be easily connected to a HDTV, although no suitable cable is supplied in the box. You can also use the 10x optical zoom lens during recording, complete with the optical vibration reduction system and autofocusing, although the lens is painfully slow in operation, presumably to avoid recording the noise of the zoom mechanism.
Sensors
Nikon Coolpix S6200 works on 1/2.3 inch RGB CCD sensor which measures 16 megapixels.
Pros
1. 10x zoom range
2. Durable body
3. Colourful, well exposed images
4. 720p HD video
Cons
1. Slow autofocus
2. Unreliable autofocus
3. A finger grip on the front would've made the camera easier to hold steady
