Over all Review of Nikon Coolpix S1100PJ Point & Shoot
Nikon Coolpix S1100PJ does not fail to strike, first importantly, by being the world’s second camera with an integrated projector. What are the changes? Firstly, the new model, Nikon’s S1100PJ has a 40 percent brighter 12 – lumen internal projector that is with a complete built in stand. Other portions of the camera have been tweaked as a part of the improvement, one is the inclusion of a touch screen interface that allows you the freedom such as with a single touch you take a picture, focus or even record videos, all by touching the specific portion of the screen. The perked up features also include slide show that plays photo with music. The video features allow you to record quality 720p HD videos, and your work can easily be played back. As for the sensor, the camera sports a 14megapixel with a 5x zoom lens and an active Vibration Reduction feature. Also, present is a prompt touch sensitive LCD monitor with 460k dots.
Design and Build Quality
Apart from the striking two-lens frontier of the camera, the entire camera looks like your ordinary compact camera. To the rear, you can see the bright 3-inch touch screen TFT LCD screen, with a resolution of 240k dots, which is quite an improvement. As for the two lenses, the one closer to the edge is the camera’s glass, while the optics in the centre is your projector lens. The LED lamp rests on the side of the lens. Other than that, there are buttons like shutter, zoom level etc all mounted on the top. The rear position, with what is left after the screen has covered most of it, are the remaining three buttons, the video recording, scene modes and playback button. In terms of size and weight, the camera does decently well, with dimensions of 100.8mm x 62.7mm x 24.1mm and weight of 180g. It is also available in different colors apart from Black; those are Silver, Green and Purple.
Focus and Face Detection
In Nikon Coolpix S1100PJ, the Touch AF / AE is a simple AF point selection by touch, though it requires from you to release it to take a shot. Once you click on the screen on a relevant area, three focus options pops up; Touch shutter, Subject Tracking and Touch AF/AE. There are plenty of other features; among them, the prominent one is subject tracking. All you do is pick your subject and the camera follows it for you. Under Face priority AF feature, the camera automatically detects up to a great 12 faces, making all the capturing easy.
Lens and Image Stabilization
This camera caters to a shooting lens that is very much like its predecessor that is, a 5x zoom lens of the internally stacked variety, but does extend upon power up or zooming. For the focal length, it is equivalent to 35mm and ranges from 28mm to 140mm. It is a tad slow in reference to its Aperture, with the brightness being f/3.9 at the wide and f/5.8 at full telephoto. Nikon Coolpix S1100PJ however, does lack an iris diaphragm, like most small sensor digicams. In strong light conditions, it works upon a built in neutral density filter to eschew overexposure, this though has little or no effect on the depth of fields, as the physical size of the aperture stays unchanged. The camera uses a 5-way VR image stabilization system under which you have, an optical VR image stabilization, Hybrid VR image stabilization, Motion detection, and High ISO that reaches a good 6400 with Nikon’s Best shot selector (BSS).This feature that Nikon has helps to prevent blurring, those resulted from camera shakes. The result is not outstanding, but you will definitely observe sharpness in pictures, especially at shutter speeds that are critically slow for the focal length used. Though, Nikon recommends that the VR be shut up while using a tripod.
Screen and Menus
The Nikon Coolpix S1100PJ user interface depends mostly on the beautiful 3.5-inch touch screen. This screen holds a lot in common when compared to Nikon’s S80. The resolution however is much improved, it is a good 460,000 dots and fits perfectly on that 3-inch screen. In terms of practicality, the touch screen system has a good, effective control, both over speed and sensitivity. Although a little troubling, as at times, one keeps ending up at places in a menu they one is not aiming at in the first place, and for others, you have to frequently press on a single button to do what you desire.
The batteries it runs on are dedicated Lithium – ion batteries. The camera records both your videos and images on SD/ SDHC /SDXC cards. Both the cards and the batteries share a common compartment on the bottom portion of the camera. The approximate given for the camera to last on a full charge, is 220 images, this however, is a variable that can vary depending about your usage of the flash and zoom. These batteries are rechargeable.
The Nikon Coolpix S1100pj features an amazing 720p HD video mode. The video features are pretty basic. You can turn touch shooting on or off, switch the macro mode on or off, as per priority and even decide the movie quality. You can chose from 720p HD at 30fps, VGA or QVGA at either 30 or 15fps. You however, are not in the position to manually set the white balance; gain or exposure compensation neither is there a designated AE lock function. The 5x optical zoom is fully operative while filming, an improvement on Nikon Coolpix S1000pj, however the sound is still mono. For compression of the clips, you have to use QuickTime and store in a MOV container.
The camera caters to an impressive 14.1megapixel CCD sensor, the core element that delivers you those beautiful images. This together with EXPEED C2 is the reason you are able to get improved and stunning images. The quality speaks for itself, with finer details and quicker processing speed.

7 November 2010: In the footsteps of the first 'projector' model from Nikon, here we have the new Nikon Coolpix S1100pj. According to the claims made by Nikon, the unit is 40% brighter than what was offered on the predecessor, and thus, allows a projection of a 47-inch picture up to 7feet away.
* Incredible built-in projector; 14.1-megapixel CCD sensor
* 5x wide-angle optical Zoom-Nikkor glass lens
* 3-inch touch-screen display; 5-way VR Image Stabilization system
* HD (720p) movie recording with One-Touch control button
* Capture images and video to SD/SDHC memory card
Nikon added and removed the projector camera S1100pj from its Coolpix line up. The images and videos can now be projected up to 47inches in size. For the purpose of business or for displaying presentations, the camera can be used. It comes with a complete stand that can help for basing it properly. The remote control lets you control the projector from a sufficient distance. The sensor holds the tag of an effective 14.1MP, there is an optical zoom up to 5 times, and the lens can be adjusted with a focal length that ranges from 28mm to 140mm. To increase the shake tolerance, Nikon S1100pj comes fitted with a 5-way VR system. It uses an optical and electronic way that too, with a best shot selector system, motion detection and a max ISO sensitivity of 6400. The entire combo ensures that you get a blur free image under any condition. Exposure modes are restricted to Easy Auto, Smart Portrait, Auto and scene modes, the last class comprises of seventeen different functions that suit almost every condition. There is no manual exposure to the camera as a standard of any kind, and that poses as a problem. There is exposure compensation function that can be adjusted over +/-2EV, and a three inches wide LCD screen that has a resolution of 460,000 dots and touch screen functionality. The HD video recording can also be achieved at a maximum resolution of 1280 x 720 format, meaning 720p HD. The camera supports recording of movies and images wherein, the use of SDXC card is a possibility. The camera focusing system is one of the better aspects, for it finds a subject with ease and freezes on them fast, even when the shooting conditions are not that favorable. By pressing the desired area over the touch screen, you can focus on your object; it can be a little tricky to focus on the objects at first. After the capturing has been done, the display of the pictures may take a good amount of seconds, and due to the sensitivity of touch screen, it may be a little jittery to browse through the stills and videos. The metering with the camera is mostly sharp and the camera has the tendency to turn to overexposure in some situations. In favorable conditions, the camera can produce high level of detail especially at the center of frame. After noise reduction, the images look quite heavily brought up with less detail. The images taken at the longer zoom end are soft and lack the definition. These could be the reasons why Nikon Coolpix S1100pj has been discontinued.
