Over all Review of Canon Powershot SX40 HS

Canon Powershot SX40 HS Price

Overall Review

Canon PowerShot SX40 HS is a truly versatile point and shoot camera that ends in giving you quality results. The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS's superpower lies in its 12 megapixel CMOS-based 'superzoom' that is a whooping 35X! Tag along with the high sensitivity 12MP sensor the Canon's HS System with DIGIC5 processor you are sure to get brilliant low light images and overall images with reduced noise and greater quality pictures. The colors are vibrant and this vibrancy is brought to life with the amazing white balance. Further now we have the Optical Image Stabilizer that eliminates perhaps the most menacing of our photographic challenges : the blurs! It stabilizes the image to give you clear and steady pictures, this along with a 24 mm to 840mm ultra wide angle lens that gives you the oppurtunity of taking pictures of large groups, beautifully vast landscapes, huge skyscrapers and what not. The 'it factor' is brought  up by the 'IS technology' which automatically switches back and forth from different stabilization modeAlso included is a vari-angle 2.7 inch LCD, flash hotshoe, variety of creative filters, an electronic viewfinder, full manual control, video recording options, 2.4fps burst shooting, stereo sound and the list just does not stop. The only thing that is restricted with the camera is its availability in only the color black. All of this combines to make Canon PowerShot SX40 HS a convinient and brilliant image capturing machine.

Design and Build Quality

Canon PoswerShot SX40 HS's a bulky beast and is not a great deal smaller than entry level Digital SLR from which it adopts its style from. With batteries included this camera weighs roughly about 600 grams but we can forgive this bulkiness, for Canon PoswerShot SX40 HS offers an amazing 35x zoom. Also the measurements 3.6 by 4.8 by 4.2 inches conclusively makes the camera approach the size and weight of a budget DSLR but again with an amazing and a longer zoom range. And when it comes to the camera's build quality the camera body is majorly metal based with a few plastic elements. While we can call Canon PoswerShot SX40 a fairly easy to grip camera the handgrip available is rather shallow to what most Canon PoswerShot SX40's rival in the market offers.

Focus and Face Detection

The focal length of Canon SX40 HS ranges from 4.3mm wide to 150.5mm tele with 35mm film equivalent of 24mm wide and 840mm tele. Focusing range varies from 0cm to infinity in wide mofe and 1.4 m to infinity in tele mode. The device is also accompanied by a Len-shift type Image stabiliser system.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Obviously the feature that grabs all the spotlight in this device labelled under “superzoom” tag is its focal range and while this is unchanged on the SX40 HS from the earlier SX30 IS, it's important to see how it compares to its current rivals. So like its predecessor, the SX40 HS is equipped with a whopping 35x zoom range, equivalent to 24-840mm. You can see an example of the coverage below, and it's clear there's few if any occasions when you'd want for more. Indeed Canon even includes a facility for those who've become 'lost' in their composition when fully zoomed-in. Pressing the 'Zoom Framing Assist' button in the upper right corner of the rear surface temporarily zooms-out for a quick composition check, before automatically returning to the original longer focal length.

Screen and Menus

Canon SX40 HS shares exactly the same screen as its predecessor, and that is heavily affecting the looks of it. It's relatively small by modern standards at 2.7in and nothing to get excited about in the resolution department either with just 230k dots. On the upside the screen, like the SX30 IS before it, is fully-articulated, allowing it to flip and twist in any direction, including towards the subject or back on itself for protection. It is important to also consider their screen shapes. The Canon and Sony screens are both 4:3 aspect ratios, which mean photos taken at their native resolutions fill the screen, while 16:9 video is letter-boxed with thick black bars above and below. When comparing these screens side by side, the Sony image looks much larger than its 0.3in diagonal advantage would imply.

Battery

Canon powershot SX40 HS is run by the NB-10L Lithium Ion battery pack which is rated at 90mAH, rechargeable ofcourse. The life of which is talked to last 380 shots if with screen and 400 if takes via the viewfinder, or about 80 minutes of video. Making it a long lasting camera for your long and warming experiences with family or alone, at a party or wedding. This is your thing to carry as it gives you ample memories to reserve.

Video Mode

The dedicated movie recording button shall turn you into videographers from photographers with just a snap of your fingers. Canon Powershot SX40 HS presents to you HD video recording at up to 1080p at 24fps with stereo sound. There is room for you to zoom as you film, allowing photographers to make use of the full focal range, and even capture images while you record. Canon PowerShot SX40 HS also supports Apple's iFrame format that allows video clips to be imported and edited on commonly used software thus simplifying your post production work for you. Audio is recording along by the help of the stereo microphone in the camera and impressively enough there is an option to adjust the recording levels and also a wind filter. Another outstanding quality that Canon's rivals fail to incoorporate is the feature of an external microphone input. As for the creative bit one can always use different scene modes and other stuff like Miniature effect.

Sensors

The 1080p video, slow motion and fast continuous shooting modes on the SX40 HS are made possible by its high-speed CMOS sensor. This is a key difference between it and the earlier SX30 IS which employed a CCD sensor. Another is the presence of Canon's latest DIGIC 5 image processor. The SX40 HS allows you to record images at four different resolutions, in four different aspect ratios and in the choice of two JPEG compression levels. Best quality Large Fine 1:1 JPEGs typically measure 2.5 to 3MB each. Canon claims the 12 Megapixel resolution of the back-illuminated CMOS sensor in the SX40 HS coupled with the DIGIC 5 processor delivers lower noise levels than its predecessor.

Pros

  • 35x zoom range
  • Full HD video recording
  • Low noise levels
  • 10.3fps shooting

Cons

  • Poor EVF
  • No raw shooting
