Over all Review of Canon PowerShot A2500 Point & Shoot

Canon PowerShot A2500 Point & Shoot Price

Overall Review

The A2500 surfaced as the revamped version of the entry-level pocket camera A2300. There are no significant differences between the two models, for A2500 sports the same 16MP 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor. The images are processed inside the DIGIC 4 processor and the optical zoom lens provides zooming capability up to 5x. Therefore, the 35mm equivalent of the focal range is wide angle at 28mm to telephoto at 140mm. The maximum aperture goes from f/2.8 to f/6.9, respectively. The LCD screen is 2.7inches wide and the display is 230,000 dots. The videos can be captured at 720p and lower resolution at 25fps. Also, 640 x 480pixel images can be shot at 30fps. You can achieve nice shots with the camera under bright daylight but viewing the screen under the same light may become difficult. Canon PowerShot A2500 deploys the smart auto mode provided exclusively by the firm. It recognizes different shooting situations from among the thirty-two scenes and chooses the apt camera settings for the scenes to be captured. There are creative filters as well that include fish eye effect, monochrome, and toy camera effect. The camera features the new ECO mode that saves battery power so that you can take more snaps with single charge. One of the sad points about A2500 is that it does not have an inbuilt optical image stabilization. The image stabilization is of digital kind but that works by increasing the ISO sensitivity and noise levels to improve the shutter speed and cut the blur. It may not be all what many shutterbugs are after. The camera is available in three colors Black, Silver, and Red. At the bottom, you have the memory and battery card slots wherein, the shutter button sits on top, surrounded by zoom controls. A microUSB port sits on the right of the cam.

Design and Build Quality

The dimensions of Canon PowerShot A2500 are 97.7 x 56.0 x 20.9mm. The device is quite sleek and comfortable to hold in hands and comes with a weight of 125 grams, thus, can be said to be the lightest snapper yet. The front of the camera holds 5x optical zoom lens and a built in flash. The panel at the rear is a 2.7inches wide LCD screen with 230K dots. There is a five way D pad along with physical controls that let you to access the menu and video recording. The space for battery and SD card is at the bottom with the USB port that sits to the right side. The body of the camera is all-metallic. It is shipped in three-color choices namely, Black, Silver, and Red. The camera utilizes the Li-Ion battery and features new ECO mode that saves the battery consumption such that you can take more pictures with a single charge. Coming back to the rear, with the pressing of the button on D pad, you can toggle Auto Mode. The left button lets you access the ECO mode wherein, if the camera remains idle for 10 seconds, the ECO mode, if active, turns off the display. The other two directional buttons have been provided for displaying info and flash settings. At the bottom, you have a compartment for Li-Ion battery and a card slot for memory card.

Focus and Face Detection

Canon PowerShot A2500 offers TTL AF with AiAF. The ISO settings range from 100 to 1600. The focus system is a 1-point type and the closest you can get to the object is 3cm, therefore, the macro mode churns out fair images. As far as the face detection is concerned, the spec sheet does point out at the camera, which has the face detection capability as well.

Lens and Image Stabilization

The Canon PowerShot A2500 comes with Canon zoom lens, which is 5mm - 25mm. The 35mm-equivalent reads, 28mm at wide-end and 140mm at telephoto. The widest aperture or the highest f-stop is at 2.8 beginning from 0.9. The optical zoom is up to 5x and the digital zoom is up to 4x. The lens construction is of 6 elements in 5 groups type. Simply put, the lens is built with two internal lenses, one double sided aspherical, and the other, double sided aspherical UA. The maximum resolution is of 4608 x 3456 with an aspect ratio of 4:3. There is no optical image stabilization but only digital image stabilization, which works by typically raising the ISO and noise levels to increase the speed of the shutter and to reduce blur.

Screen and Menus

The menu system is easier to navigate and the screen is 2.7inches wide 230k dot LCD, which works well enough for viewing purposes in Canon PowerShot A2500.

Battery

The Canon PowerShot A2500 comes with a Li-Ion NB-11L rechargeable battery. On single charge, you can catch up to 220 stills. The Canon's ECO mode prolongs the battery life. The battery charger of this Canon device is NB-4L Li-Ion, which can be availed at any of the Canon's showrooms. If the battery dies while shooting, you would have to buy a new one or wait for it to get charged by your break.

Video Mode

Canon PowerShot A2500 captures videos in 720p High Definition at 25fps. At 30fps, video can be recorded at 640 x 480 VGA. With zoom up to 5x, the audio quality is quite nice. Video recording can be done in either PAL or NTSC with the video frame format of 1280 x 720.

Sensors

The sensor of Canon PowerShot A2500 is CCD 16.0megapixel wherein, the size of the sensor is 1/2.3 inches. The images caught are clean and clear.
