Canon PowerShot A 3300 Review
Canon PowerShot A 3300 has a fresh sophisticated look available in five colors: Red, black, silver, pink and the striking electric blue. Like its predecessor the camera is easy to use and carry. With dimensions being pocket or purse friendly 3.7 x 2.2 x 0.9 Inches and the camera weight a manageable 148 grams batteries included Canon PowerShot A3300 IS is compact indeed. Canon PowerShot A3300 is based around a high resolution 16-Megapixel, CCD image sensor coupled with a 5x zoom lens that offers a reasonable focal lengths ranging from a useful 28mm wide angle to a moderate 140mm telephoto. Optical Image Stabilizer, an important feature that has become Canon's forte today is absent from this device sadly. The 3.0 inch LCD screen is a tad larger than that of its predecessor but the 230,000 dot resolution stays the same but it has a bright screen that offers wide viewing angle and ample detailing for everyday shooting.
Canon PowerShot A3300 gives you some excellent photos with sensitivities ranging from ISO 80 to ISO 1,600 equivalents, which extends to ISO 6,400 in Low Light mode. ISO 200 for this camera being best to take detailed and sharp images. Nearly nothing in this camera is manually offering, it prides itself for being easy to use i.e. it is more inclined in its Auto features. Smart Auto makes your work easy for it has a full 32 predefined shooting situation to choose from and it competently picks only the best. Seven white balance modes are available on Canon PowerShot A3300 – Auto, Manual, or five presets. Further offering creative filters like Fish eye, Miniature effect, Toy camera effect, Monochrome, Super vivid and Poster effect. A new discreet mode disables the camera’s sound, flash and AF assist beam for shooting in quiet situations.
The built in flash strobe has a range of 13 feet at wide angle and recharges at a decent ten seconds or less time. Apart from taking picture Canon PowerShot A3300 can capture video in HD at 720p at 30fps.Color performance is reported to be excellent for Canon PowerShot A3300 as it offers a good selection of exposure mode. Other handy feature that it provides is the ‘Face detection’ and the ‘Red eye correction’ option. Powered by a lithium ion battery Canon PowerShot A3300 offers lasting a good 230 shot from a full charge. Overall a portable camera for your daily use that gives you commendably sharp, clear and color natural images.
Overall Review
Canon Powershot A3300 IS is a 16 megapixel camera with a 28mm wide, 5x optical zoom that can be bagged in for a low price. But does the low price indicate a compromise on features and quality? To begin with its look, the Canon Powershot A3300 IS does give you a colorful range to choose from. Being available in pink, aqua, bright orange to cater to up-trendy minds and silver for traditional on lookers. Despite the moderate zoom Canon Powershot A3300 IS has an image stabilizer to give you steady images eliminating blurs in still even in lowlight conditions. The camera has an easy to use yet impressively fast command dial that enables quick selection of different shooting modes. Canon Powershot A3300 IS offers Program, Auto and Easy modes for starters giving you ample space to shoot with or without the havoc of deciding settings. Where the ‘Smart Auto’ has a whooping 32 mode scenes to select the best from the ‘Easy mode’ prevents you from accidently changing settings.
Perhaps the coolest of these quick features is the Live View Control which allows you to make exposure and color adjustments on the screen. It offers three options: Light, Saturation and Color temperature all of which is done in real time so you can concentrate more on shooting and waste little time. In fact Canon Powershot A3300 IS’s menu is easy to navigate overall. ISO offering of Canon Powershot A3300 IS 80 – 1600 with which low light shooting is eased and noise is relatively more reduced on a lower ISO. Canon Powershot A3300 IS has further a pretty neat 3.0 inch LCD screen with 5 different brightness settings allowing you to adjust to any lighting condition. Other features include the 720 p video recording in HD with ‘Dynamic IS’ which uses the Optical Image Stabilizer to reduce wobbles while shooting. Also has some creative filters, six of them. ‘Fish eye’, ‘Miniature’ and ‘Toy camera effect’ being few.
Design and Build Quality
A mystery: Why the hell is this camera in the PowerShot series with such classy design? The design and built quality almost resemble the IXUS family of Canon. Looking at the A-series body shape that this camera flaunts it is easy to say that a sample from IXUS DNA has entered the PowerShot series. The device sports the familiar “choc ice” shape of Canon IXUS series, even though with a little less level contours due the the obvious positioning of mode dial in the top corner. Accompanyingthe mode dial is a large flush-mounted shutter button with a zoom collar surround as opposed to the thumb-operated zoom buttons of its predecessor. A step further to the right locates the slightly recessed on/off switch, which requires a firm push to activate, something that isn't going to happen by accident. The device flaunts a 3.0 inch display which almost covers up the back panel, the other things being a recessed panel which comes alongside a control pad which is covered up by four buttons namely Face selection, playback, display and the menu. In all Canon Powershot A 3300 feels really solid and well built to hold and shoot. One of the downsides of the device being that is not that pocketable and slimmer.
Focus and Face Detection
Like almost all compacts featured by Canon, Canon PowerShot A3300 also features a Face AiAF, which is a 9 point autofocus system, it detects faces in the frames and adjusts the focus and exposure of the device automatically. The camera works under Canon forte DIGIC 4 Processor and like any other camera, this one also excels. It's quick to focus on faces and holds on to them once acquired. Though it becomes a little less sure of itself in low light, CanonPowerShot A3300 IS does well at identifying faces at a distance and when turned almost to full profile. All detected faces are framed and you can switch the main subject by pressing the Face selector button on the back panel.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Canon PowerShot A3300 works on a 5x optical zoom which is majorly unimpressive and at a 35mm equivalent focal length at 28mm extending to 140mm. The f2.8 maximum aperture is brighter than many compacts in this price bracket and at the maximum telephoto and of the range you get a respectable f5.9. The aperture closes in more or less even steps as you progress through the zoom range. Canon PowerShot A3300 IS obviously flaunts image stabilisation, the feature that shifts lens elements to get rid of camera shake while shooting at really slow shutter speeds and obviously this is what IS that succeeds the model name stands for.
Screen and Menus
Canon PowerShot IS sports a 3 inch screen and works on a display resolution of 230,000 dot pixels. The device works under aspect ratio of 4:3. The same is true for standard resolution movies, although for HD movie shooting the 16:9 image is letterboxed with thick black bars top and bottom.
Battery
Canon PowerShot A3300 works on a NB-8L Li-Ion battery and the device provides sufficiently enough power upto around 230 shots according to tests performed by CIPA. The battery is charged outside the camera using the supplied charging unit. Remaining power is displayed on screen using a three segment battery icon which turns orange when the power is running low.
Video Mode
Canon PowerShot A3300 IS can shoot HD videos at the resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels i.e in HD quality at the rate of 30 frames per second. Standard resolution video can also be recorded at 640 x 480 and 320 x 240 sizes, also at 30fps and are encoded using the H.264 codec and saved as a .mov file.
Sensors
Canon PowerShot A3300 IS works on a 1/2.3 inch CCD sensor. The sensor resolution for PowerShot A3300 IS is 16 Megapixels. Files are saved as JPEGs using one of two compression settings, Fine and Normal.
Pros
5x stabilised optical zoom
28mm equivalent wide angle
Creative filters and Live View Control
720p HD video
Cons
Difficult to operate control pad
No optical zoom on video
No HDMI port
