Design and Build Quality

Clicking in at 93.2mm x 52.7mm x 20mm in dimensions and with the weight of 135 gms when accompanied by a battery and memory card, Canon IXUS 125 HS is really very easy to handle and is build to perfection in comfort in use. When compared to its predecessor, the proportions remain same, the design has evolved into a slightly harder-edged version, the rounded edges are still there, but with a tighter radius. The front of the camera looses the silver-coloured lens bezel and is now all the same colour and the AF Illuminator has been repositioned underneath the built-in flash. The camera looks classy except for the HS badge which signifies High Sensitivity characteristics of the CMOS sensor. The control layout of the top plate of Canon IXUS 125 HS remains unchanged with an auto/alternate mode switch, on/off button and shutter release with zoom collar. Though there have been significant alterations in design where Canon has opted for shiny black buttons with matt surrounds in contrast to the earlier silver ones.

Focus and Face Detection

Canon IXUS 125 HS works on a focal length 4.3 wide – 21.5 tele mm which is 35 mm film equivalent to 24mm wide – 120 tele mm. Focussing range in normal mode is 3cm – infinity in wide mode and 90 cm – infinity in tele mode.  The two types of Autofocus control systems provided in the device are : Continuous and Servo AF. The three AutoFocus frames in view are Face AiAF, Tracking AF, Center AF.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Canon IXUS 125 HS flaunts 5x optical zoom alongside an equivalent focal range of 24-120mm. It is not a hidden fact that Canon’s 5x is the new 4x of the camera world., that being said Canon IXUS 125 has the lowest zoom range available in any compact camera launched in 2012, with the exception of enthusiast targeted Canon PowerShot G1 X. This is the same lens that is sported on the more expensive touch screen Canon IXUS 240 HS and these two models are the only ones in the range to offer a super-wide 24mm field of view - the longer zooms all start at 28mm. But while the 24mm wide angle is great for interiors, group shots and landscapes, Canon still has nothing to match the Panoramic modes that Sony Cyber-Shots and more recently Nikon, Panasonic and Fujifilm Compacts offered. Canon IXUS 125 HS like all 2012 Canon compacts employ the Intelligent IS lens-shift image stabilisation system which compensates for camera shake permitting hand-held shots at slower shutter speeds than would ordinarily be possible. It's intelligent because it can sense the direction of movement of the camera and sets the appropriate stabilisation mode - Normal, Panning, Macro or Tripod (off).

Screen and Menus

Canon IXUS 125 HS has a 3 inch LCD screen with 460k dots. This is now more or less the standard screen used across the Canon Compact range and provides a bright, contrast filled and detailed view with a wide range of viewing movies angles. The screen proportions are 4:3 so it is almost ideal for shooting stills which use the full screen area, when shooting the view is letter boxed with black bands top and bottom.

Battery

The combined battery and card compartment of Canon IXUS 125 HS is on the base of the camera and, in contrast to the generally high build quality, the hinge feels slight and fragile. When it's closed it fits securely enough though. Canon IXUS 125 HS charges on an NB11L battery which provides enough power for 170 shots on a full charge and is charged outside the camera using the supplied charging unit.

Video Mode

The whole bunch of Canon IXUS cameras has supported Full HD video recording since 2011 and Canon IXUS 125 HS continues to offer the 1080p24 best quality mode of its predecessor. It also has a 720p30 mode and both of these are encoded with the H.264 codec and saved as QuickTime .mov files. The single clip limit for 1080p24 is up to 4GB or 10 minutes, whichever comes soonest and Canon recommends a Speed Class 6 card or faster.

Sensors

Sensor is like the backbone of any operating function of a camera. Sensor converts Optical images to electrical signals for image processing. Canon IXUS 125 HS works on a 1/2.3 inch CMOS sensor at 16.1 camera effective pixels. The device runs on Canon forte DIGIC 4 Processor.

Pros

5x stabilised optical zoom.
Smart Auto in Movie modes.
Optical zoom while movie recording.
Excellent image quality.

Cons

Poor battery life.
Flimsy card compartment door.
Flush buttons can be difficult to press.
Reduced resolution on Burst mode.
