Over all Review of Canon EOS 650D SLR Rebel T4i kit (EF S18-55 IS II)

Canon EOS 650D SLR Rebel T4i kit (EF S18-55 IS II) Price

Overall Review

One of the most difficult environment to set foot in, in today’s camera world is the upper entry level DSLRs, it is well known that all the companies have to be dead cautious and also have to be bold enough at the same time if they need to have any scope for success of the device. And they don’t called Canon the Numero Uno camera company in the world for no reason, Canon clearly makes a distinction between its budget, upper entry level and mid-range models of cameras. . One such device which has abilities to be probably one of the best DSLRs out for access today, if not the best is Canon EOS 650D kit (EF S18-55 IS II) which has many upgrades in the pocket over predecessor Canon EOS 600D. The resolution remains at 18 Megapixels, the video is still 1080p, the AF system is the familiar Canon 9-point arrangement and the articulated 3 inch screen with a resolution of 1040 k dots looks much the same. Continous shooting being boosted from 3.7fps to 5fps and the involvement to two new multiple exposure shooting modes are new improvement provided in the device. Also joining Multi shot noise reduction is Handheld Night Scene which allows you to choose the ISO sensitivity and HDR Backlight combines three shots to extend total range. Finally, Canon has brought in the announcement of two new lenses which provide Stepper Motor Technology for faster autofocus in case of a video recording - an 18-135mm kit zoom and a brand new 40mm f2.8 pancake prime.

Design and Build Quality

Well, talking about the designing of this device, Canon EOS 650D kit (EF S18-55 IS II) has the looks that speak out for uncanny similarity to the camera that preceded it. To be exact in all the three respects i.e. length, breath and height, the camera measures a good 133.1mm x 99.8mm x 78.8mm and alongside a battery and SD card it measures 575 gms. Only comparing the two devices physically both the camera are insanely identical, one really has to bring in the hawk eye system to spot the variations in the design. Aside the name plate on the face of the body, the most understandable dissimilarity is a redesigned on-off switch which now has a third location for movie shelling which no longer appears on the mode ring. Built-in stereo mics are situated in front of the hot shoe and the exhibit button has vanished. Further, the only differences are the rather insignificant changes to the shape of the buttons on the rear panel. Apart from the relocation of the movie mode the mode dial is the same as on Canon EOS 600D with the PASM modes which is well followed by Scene intelligent Auto, Flash off, Creative Auto and a handful of scene modes ending with Handheld NightScene and the new HDR Backlight control.

Focus and Face Detection

Canon EOS 650D kit (EF S18-55 IS II) works on the common 9 point AF system. The AF system has been fundamentally refurbished with Canon’s forte cross-type sensors in all nine locations and a recent hybrid AF system which puts in Phase Detect capabilities into the main imaging sensor, and allows the performance for better continuous autofocusing in Live View and movies.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Probably, the most important part of the device is the lens that mounts on it, and is also the most expensive part. In this review, the lens mount discussed is Canon EF-S 18-55mm, well this lens mount is mostly or maybe totally plastic exception is the glass mounted on it. There are quite too many advantages of this construction like loss of unnecessary weight brought along with the lens, and obviously the reduction of cost. The meagre manual focusing ring is scarcely usable and is located on the end of the expansion objective end of the lens. There is no USM focusing motor in Canon EF-S 18-55mm which means there is no FTM focusing. Even without USM, Focussing of this device is not slow or loud. This lens is certainly not the most epic lens ever made by Canon but is just fine for its targeted audience.

Screen and Menus

Rear of the camera is almost fully captured by the big 3 inch which is fully touch sensitive. This 3 inch display is also fully articulated and with the same size and resolution as its precursor. This is a capacitive type screen rather than a resistive type which means it's very responsive and supports multi-touch gestures that most people will be familiar with from phone and tablet use.

Battery

You can still only see 4 levels on the battery life indicator, compare it to the accurate percentage as shown in Sony’s Info Lithium models. If a still longer lifespan is required the optional BG-E8 battery grip can take two LP-E8 packs or six AA batteries, while providing portrait controls and grip. Alternatively if you prefer mains power, there's an optional ACK-E8 adapter.

Video Mode

Canon EOS 650D kit (EF S18-55 IS II) offers a really wide range of video modes, The best of which is 1920 x 1080 or 1080p Full HD image resolution at 1080 pixels at 25 frames per second, lower end specifications include shooting videos at 1080p24 720p50 and 640p25. Once Switch to NTSC and the 25 and 50fps modes are substituted for 30 and 60fps mode, video is encoded using H.264 with uncompressed PCM audio and amassed in a QuickTime MOV wrapper and you'll need a Class 6 (or higher) SD card to support the maximum recording times.

Sensors

Canon EOS 650D has an 18 Megapixel sensor which measures 22.3 x 14.9mm producing images with a maximum size of 5184 x 3456 pixels and a 3:2 aspect ratio. The sensitivity range runs from 100 to 25600 ISO and the shutter speed range is 30 - 1/4000 with a fastest flash sync speed of 1/200.

Pros

1. 3 inch LCD capacitive touch display
2. Hybrid CMOS AF sensor with a good continuous AF
3. Quiet focusing STM kit lens
4. Chromatic aberration correction.

Cons

1. There is only 3-frame auto bracketing.
2. Movie crop / digital zoom of Canon EOS 600D dropped.
3. Live mode hybrid AF can be slow and unresponsive.

Canon EOS 650D SLR is an amazing entry level add-on to the DSLR range of Canon, worth to check out before opting a camera. It focuses specifically the comfort of beginners while keeping pace with the experienced photographers as well. The first impression that would hold your eye to this model is its admirable vari-angle, touch-sensitive, 3 inch wide, LCD screen. It gives an extraordinary ease to swipe through the images of the cam with a touch similar to those of i-phones. At the same time, those who might not succumb to this change, can have an access to all the features via the buttons and dials available at the corners.

The 18MP of image sensor might make you feel a bit compromising but the photo quality with resolutions of 5184 x 3456p and DIGIC 5 processor clicks detailed images. The continuous shooting rate of 5fps is well suitable to capture theatrical, action, sports and many more events. The new hybrid AF system is another of its USP. It incorporates both phase and contrast detect AF. It means that the subject gets both sharpness and focus automatically. Disappointingly, there is no headphone port but full HD movies can be recorded with a video snapshot mode and viewed on an HD TV with a mini HDMI port. An integrated speedlite transmitter and external flashguns, EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens having a focal length of 64mm, comes out its best for photographing still life objects, portraits, landscape shots etc. The STM or stepper motor based lens aims mainly to click snaps and audio, free from blurs and whirrs.

Another appreciable feature of this camera is the high ISO sensitivity maximizing to 25600. Free from noise and plenty of detail are the key descriptions of the images snapped by it. The  multi shot noise reduction mode and intelligent auto lighting optimiser technology, works well in different situations of low light, bright sunlight, too contrasty as well as nearly dark. Besides, it also introduces certain new modes for user functionality such as HDR backlight control mode to help night scenes pretty well. The two new art bold effect and water painting effect are also noticeable. The other basic features of face tracking and recognition, flexizone modes, quick shutter, nine focusing zones etc remains the same as in other canon models.

All in one, it is worth comparing to other available ones like Nikon D3200. Only JPEG format in NR mode, lack of headphone socket and rating button are some of the cons of Canon EOS 650D SLR, but the other charms of easy interface and quality performance cannot be overshadowed.
